Hemdingen has extensive agricultural land; it is also home to Himmelmoor, and the Ox Road runs through the west of the area. Prehistoric burial mounds add a historical dimension to the landscape and cycling themes. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between different focuses: moorland and nature conservation, local history or a stage of a longer cycling route.

Moorland and Protected Areas

Himmelmoor in Hemdingen is one of the particularly recommended recreational destinations in the Rantzau administrative district. The 582-hectare nature reserve also includes land in Hemdingen. It protects remaining raised bog areas and moorland forests, fen areas, wet meadows, species-rich grassland, standing water bodies and former peat extraction sites. The protected area therefore includes a variety of habitats, not just moorland. Industrial peat extraction at Himmelsmoor ended in 2018.

Prehistoric Traces at Süllbarg

In northeastern Hemdingen, the remaining prehistoric burial mounds form the Süllbarg nature reserve on the edge of Vielmoor. The area was placed under nature protection in 1935. The burial mounds add a clearly identified trace of prehistory to the picture of Hemdingen; Süllbarg’s history of protection dates back to the first half of the 20th century. Those looking to combine nature and local history will find a different focus here than the moorland habitats.

The Ox Road and Cycling Information

The Ox Road from Wedel to Jutland passes through western Hemdingen as a cycling route, with a rest area along the way. Depending on the route variant, it is approximately 240 kilometres long and connects moors, forests, geest landscapes, historic sites and towns, away from heavily trafficked roads. The approximate distance refers to the individual route variant; the section in Hemdingen is part of this route.

Outside the village, there is an information board for cyclists on Heeder Straße near Hof Kühl. It provides information about Hemdingen and its history, as well as the nearby moors and their historical use. In this way, information about local history and the moorland complements route guidance.

Shopping and Getting There

Hemdingen has several farm shops and a number of agricultural businesses that sell their produce directly. There are also two butcher shops, a bakery and a wine shop. Local business offerings may change, so check before your visit which places are currently suitable for your plans.

The L111 and L195 roads connect Hemdingen with Quickborn and Barmstedt, as well as the A7 and A23 motorways. Bus route 294 provides public transport connections on weekdays and links to the AKN rail network via Quickborn and Barmstedt. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for your travel date, as services and times may change. This makes it possible to match your choice of accommodation to your plans and preferred way of getting there.
