Heist lies between the Elbe marshes and the Geest. Agriculture and tree nurseries shape the local landscape, along with walks in Heistmer Forest, a high ropes course in the forest and Uetersen/Heist Airfield. This brings together a variety of excursion themes: moorland and marsh, forest walks, high-altitude courses and aviation. For planning, you can consider these highlights separately and then decide which ones you would like to shape your stay.

Moorland, marsh and Geest

The Tävsmoor/Haselauer Moor nature reserve lies between Appen and Heist, south of Uetersen Airfield. The southern part of Haselauer Moor drains into the Elbe marshes via the Holmau, also called Happelbach. This provides a specific connection to moorland and waterways, in addition to Heist’s location between the Elbe marshes and the Geest. The names help distinguish the landscape areas: the nature reserve lies between two towns, while the watercourse mentioned flows from the southern moor into the Elbe marshes. Heist’s agricultural surroundings and local tree nurseries are another part of its landscape character.

Forest walks and high ropes course

Walks in Heistmer Forest offer a different focus from the high ropes course. The course is set up in the forest and takes you across suspended obstacles several metres above the ground. The courses run at different heights, including lower sections for visitors who prefer an experience with less emphasis on heights. If you plan to visit the high ropes course, you can take these differences in height into account when choosing your experience. A forest walk and a high-altitude course are therefore two distinct ways to spend time outdoors.

Uetersen/Heist Airfield adds another distinctive feature. It is home to powered-flight and gliding clubs, flight schools, charter companies and private aircraft owners. The municipality promotes scenic flights from the local airfield, with views towards the nearby marshes and the Elbe. The airfield can be reached by plane, car, bicycle or on foot. The range of options therefore extends from a walk on the ground to a view from the air, without combining the forest and airfield into a single excursion destination.

Getting your bearings and getting there

To reach the high ropes course by bus, get off at the Heist/Rosentwiete stop and then walk about 200 metres towards the B 431. Bus route 489 connects Wedel, Heist, Uetersen and Elmshorn for journeys to the high ropes course. If you cycle there from the town, follow the signs towards Uetersen/Heist Airfield. Check the current timetable before travelling and follow the signs on site. An Ochsenweg information board about Heist is located outside the town at the junction of Haseldorfer StraĂźe and Wischweg. It is another specific point of reference when exploring the surrounding area.

More highlights in the broader destination of Pinneberg

Pinneberg, as the broader travel destination, has its own highlights. Pinneberger Fahlt is a forest area and local recreation area in Pinneberg City Forest, used for walking, jogging and sports activities. Pinneberg’s tree park is a park featuring 26 Trees of the Year. The idea originated as part of the International Garden Show igs Hamburg 2013, in the Pinneberger Baumschulland exhibition area. For culture, there is the Drostei: it is the cultural centre of the Pinneberg district and hosts exhibitions, concerts and literary events. These examples add parks, recreation and culture to the picture of the broader travel destination; they are attractions in Pinneberg, not features of Heist.
