Elmshorn looks both to its architectural and urban history and to the Krückau. This distinction can help you choose where to stay: its cultural offerings include a church, museums and sculptures, while the harbor, excursions and landscape shape the picture along the water. There is also a hiking trail through Krückau Park, cycling routes and a swimming park. This lets you take different interests into account when planning your stay, rather than limiting your options to a single theme.

City History on Different Scales

St. Nikolai in the center of Elmshorn is the city’s oldest church building. The church is a Gothic hall church with Baroque furnishings and is regularly open to visitors. The Elmshorn Industrial Museum offers a different perspective on the history of Schleswig-Holstein: Its four floors showcase the development of industry, technology, work and everyday life. It is housed in a listed former warehouse building, and multilingual audio guides are also available. The church and industrial history thus offer different highlights for a cultural stay.

Elmshorn’s water tower began operating in 1902 and is open to the public following its renovation. Check the current visitor arrangements before your trip. An exhibition in the Taharahaus at Elmshorn’s Jewish cemetery tells the story of the city’s Jewish residents and their persecution under National Socialism.

At the Konrad-Struve-Haus, visitors walk through an accessible repository of local history. The modern exhibition includes everyday items as well as typical and unusual objects from Elmshorn’s past and a reconstructed living room. The presentation thus combines selected objects with a furnished living space—a different approach from the wide-ranging industrial history at the Industrial Museum.

The Krückau, the Harbor and Guided Insights

The Krückau Harbor is Elmshorn’s maritime center. From its berth in Elmshorn Harbor, the historic sailing vessel GLORIA offers seasonal sailing and motor excursions on the Krückau, the Elbe and its tributaries. Check current departure times before your visit. This is a way to combine the harbor perspective with a trip on the water, provided a suitable departure is available.

The Krückau also offers a variety of experiences on land: Elmshorn’s sculpture garden features twelve traditional and contemporary works along the river in the city center. Guided city tours cover historic buildings, the harbor and well-known figures from Elmshorn. If a tour suits your stay, check current dates and booking options in advance.

The Krückau takes on a different character in the ebb and flow of the tides and provides a habitat for lampreys and kingfishers. It is also part of the designated Upper Krückau and Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and adjacent areas FFH sites. These water and nature themes complement the urban sights without replacing the harbor and museums.

On Foot, by Bike or at the Swimming Park

The Krückau hiking trail starts at Mühlendamm and passes through Krückau Park in Elmshorn. For cycling trips in and around Elmshorn, the Ochsenweg and the Elbe Cycle Route are possible options; the Elbe Cycle Route passes through Elmshorn. This gives you a described route through the park and two named cycling routes as different outdoor options.

Elmshorn Swimming Park combines a 25-meter pool, a 110-meter waterslide, a climbing wall, a children’s area, a sauna area and water classes. The swimming park is accessible by bike, bus or car. Since facilities and classes can change, check current availability before your visit.
