Schönwalde am Bungsberg combines a long history of settlement with a distinctive high point and a nature experience area with a spiritual focus. The fieldstone church, village museum and facilities on the Bungsberg each offer something different: local history, views and nature observation.

Bungsberg: Views and Architectural History

Near Schönwalde, the Bungsberg rises to 168 metres, making it the highest elevation in Schleswig-Holstein. The visitor plateau has an observation tower and an information centre. It can be reached by a short walk or by car. The telecommunications tower is open to visitors and has an observation platform with views across Holstein Switzerland to the Baltic Sea. Check the latest access information before your visit, as access conditions may change.

The Elisabethturm stands directly next to the telecommunications tower. This listed, octagonal structure is about 22 metres high and was built in 1863 and 1864. At the Bungsberg, visitors can therefore distinguish between a viewpoint with sweeping landscape views and a structure with a history of its own.

Church and Village History

The church and settlement of Schönwalde were first mentioned in a document dating from 1240. The church was founded by Benedictine monks from Lübeck and is one of the younger fieldstone churches built in eastern Holstein at the end of the colonisation period.

The village museum is housed in the former village school and explores the everyday lives of farmers, craftspeople and housewives in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its exhibits include a historic classroom with slate boards and benches with central supports. The church and museum thus offer different insights: into the village’s early history and into rural daily and school life in later centuries.

Nature Experience Area and Stations of the Cross

The Historic Schönwalde Rectory Nature Experience Area covers about 4.5 hectares. The historic rectory complex includes the rectory, parish hall and rectory barn. The grounds also contain a restored glacial depression, rest areas, a Scout campsite with a fire pit, and newly landscaped orchards and rectory gardens.

The nature experience area is open to the public and is laid out as a circular spiritual Stations of the Cross. The Schönwalde Stations of the Cross are intended for pilgrims and individual visitors seeking a spiritual experience. A butterfly garden with wildflowers and an information point for birdwatching by the wetland add to the site’s features. Those interested in observing nature will find a different focus here than at the church or village museum.

Route and Regional Setting

The Viertenteilshufe Route passes the fieldstone church, village pond, village and school museum, and the Schönwalde am Bungsberg nature experience area. It is mapped digitally but is not signposted on site. Therefore, follow the route description and check its latest version before setting out; the route may be revised.

Schönwalde lies between Schleswig-Holstein’s Baltic coast and the forested, lake-rich Holstein Switzerland Nature Park. A well-signposted network of cycling and hiking trails offers another way to explore the region. When planning your stay, you can decide whether local history, views from the Bungsberg or nature experiences will shape your visit, without treating these different themes as though they were all part of a single route.
