Kasseedorf offers two distinct points of interest for planning your trip: nature watching in the Kasseedorf Ponds Nature Reserve and a simple overnight trekking stop for hikers and cyclists. You can plan your stay around the habitats and wildlife-watching opportunities, or around a short stage with a maximum of one overnight stay.

Kasseedorf Ponds Nature Reserve

The Kasseedorf Ponds Nature Reserve, covering around 132 hectares, lies on the eastern edge of Kasseedorf. Its compact landscape combines ponds and streams with small marshes, spring-fed mires, dry grassland, open meadows and woodland. Wet habitats sit alongside drier areas and wooded sections. The variety of landscape types makes the reserve more than just a single waterside setting and offers different opportunities for nature watching.

At the Upper Pond, an observation platform offers the chance to look out for the large emperor dragonfly and the kingfisher. A survey in 2020 recorded 60 breeding bird species in the reserve, including the crane, marsh harrier, goosander, eagle owl and wryneck. The possible sightings from the platform and the diversity of recorded breeding birds offer different perspectives: one focuses on looking for individual species, the other on the birdlife of the area.

Overnight stay on the E1 long-distance trail

A privately offered trekking stop on the E1 long-distance trail is located at the Alte Försterei. It is intended for hikers and cyclists and is available only by prior arrangement; local conditions apply. The facilities include a renovated bakehouse with a simple sleeping space under the roof, as well as a camping meadow. The maximum stay is one night. This makes the stop suitable as overnight accommodation for a short stage, rather than as a base for a longer stay in the same place.

More highlights in the wider Ostholstein destination

The wider Ostholstein destination also offers distinct cultural and historical attractions. In Eutin, the Eutin Festival presents a variety of opera and operetta performances as open-air events each summer. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin features changing exhibitions and a permanent exhibition about Eutin in its heyday around 1800. Open-air performances and exhibitions with a historical focus thus offer different cultural experiences.

In Oldenburg in Holstein, the Oldenburg Rampart is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most significant archaeological monuments. Using excavation finds and reconstructions, the Oldenburg Rampart Museum presents the archaeologically and historically reconstructed story of the Oldenburg ringfort and the Slavs in Ostholstein. The focus here is on archaeological heritage and history, while the Kasseedorf Ponds mainly invite visitors to observe nature and explore different habitats.

The wider Ostholstein destination also offers a variety of nature and activity experiences. On Fehmarn, a one-kilometre nature trail runs through the Wallnau Waterbird Reserve. At Bungsberg, visitors can hike, cycle, observe wildlife and discover nature. An observation platform is located on the telecommunications tower, 42 metres above the mast. These attractions have different focuses: Wallnau offers a short nature trail, while Bungsberg is associated with several activities.
