Großenbrode is surrounded by water on three sides. The beach and water sports, cycling and a nature trail in the forest offer different ways to spend your stay. If you are looking for accommodation in Großenbrode, you can start by considering which of these activities is most important to your plans.

South Beach and Water Sports

South Beach has a 1.5-kilometre promenade and a pier. Beach volleyball and beach soccer courts, along with the Aktiv-Point, round out the facilities: free outdoor sports equipment is available there. The beach area also offers the KinderInsel, a play area by the pier, and an adventure playground towards the mole.

South Beach has shallow water and sandbanks that are suitable for small children. This makes it possible to plan beach time and play opportunities together when deciding on the day’s activities. Play and recreational facilities may change; check locally before your trip to see which options are currently available.

Water sports on offer include SUP, kitesurfing and surfing. Board hire and taster courses are also available. Rental and course options may vary by season, so it is worth checking what is available for your travel dates.

Cycling and Nature Trail

The Baltic Sea Coast Cycle Route passes through Großenbrode on its way to Fehmarn and back. There are also local suggested routes ranging from 24 to 35 kilometres. They lead to Heiligenhafen, Sütel, Gut Görtz and Meeschendorf. Suggested routes may be revised, and signage may also change; check the latest route information before setting out.

Großenbrode’s nature discovery trail offers a different way to explore nature: the forest trail is three kilometres long and has around 30 discovery stations, including the “Path of the Senses”. This gives you a choice of different distances and ways to get active: suggested cycle routes of 24 to 35 kilometres, or a three-kilometre trail with stations. These details can help you choose a suitable focus for your day.

Harbours, Dining and Practical Information

Großenbrode has six marinas with around 1,000 berths. Capacity may change. Dining options along the beach promenade include fish sandwiches, crêpes, ice cream, cakes and restaurant meals; offerings may vary by season. Restaurants often have Baltic Sea fish on the menu, although menus can change.

Tourist information centres provide free brochures as well as cycling and hiking maps to help you find your way. Services may change. By car, you can reach Großenbrode via the A1 to Heiligenhafen and then the B207. Roadworks may temporarily change the route, so it is a good idea to check your route before setting out.

Culture in the wider destination of Ostholstein

The wider destination of Ostholstein also offers other cultural attractions. Each summer, the Eutin Festival presents a variety of opera or operetta performances as open-air events. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin features changing exhibitions and a permanent exhibition about Eutin at its heyday around 1800. Kloster Cismar in the municipality of Grömitz also hosts changing exhibitions; during the winter season, concerts take place in the vaulted hall.
