Grömitz looks out onto the Baltic Sea: an eight-kilometer-long, fine sandy beach stretches along a south-facing section of the coast. Swimming, walking, and relaxing in a beach chair are among the possible beach activities, as are visits to cafés and pedal boat trips. So if you are planning a stay focused mainly on the water, you will find various ways to spend your time at the beach.

Beach and pier

Beach services and safety measures may vary depending on the time of year. If visiting a café or taking a pedal boat ride is important to your day, check seasonal availability in advance. This will help you plan your beach visit without conflating the different activities: swimming and walking are different pursuits from taking a break in a beach chair or going for a pedal boat ride.

Another notable spot by the water is the 398-meter-long Grömitz pier. Its facilities include a sun deck, rotating chairs, climbing nets, a lighthouse slide, and an underwater gondola. The options range from spending time on the sun deck to climbing and sliding, as well as looking beneath the water's surface from the gondola. Regular boat tours also depart from the pier; services are seasonal. If you would like to plan a tour, check the schedule in advance.

Plan your journey

By car, you can reach Grömitz from the A1 via the Neustadt-Pelzerhaken/Grömitz exit. From there, the route continues for approximately ten kilometers along the B 501. If traveling by train, Neustadt/Holstein station is the starting point for onward travel by local bus or taxi; the journey takes about 20 minutes. The transport options therefore have different connection points: by car, the route along the B 501 follows the highway exit; by train, planning includes the onward journey from Neustadt/Holstein. Check road routes and public transport connections before departure.

Culture in the wider destination of Ostholstein

If you are looking for ideas beyond the coast, you can also explore the wider destination of Ostholstein. Cismar Abbey is located in the municipality of Grömitz. It hosts changing exhibitions, and concerts take place in the vaulted hall during the winter half of the year. Exhibitions and concerts offer different focuses, and the concerts are specifically held during the winter half of the year.

Eutin also offers two distinct cultural experiences within Ostholstein. Every summer, the Eutin Festival presents a variety of opera and operetta performances as open-air events. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin hosts changing exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition about Eutin during its heyday around 1800. Open-air performances and museum visits thus offer different cultural experiences.

Another historical focus can be found in Oldenburg in Holstein. The Oldenburg Wall is one of Schleswig-Holstein's most significant archaeological monuments. Using excavation finds and reconstructions, the Oldenburg Wall Museum presents the archaeologically and historically reconstructable story of the Oldenburg ring fort and the Slavs in Ostholstein. Those interested in this past can distinguish between the archaeological site and the museum's interpretation of its history.
