St. Marco Chapel was built as part of Schleswig-Holstein’s chapel-building programme and gives Göhl a tangible connection to local cultural history. The wider Ostholstein travel destination also offers museums, historic sites, nature trails and activities on the water. When planning a trip, a local architectural landmark thus goes hand in hand with a broader range of regional attractions.

Culture and History in Ostholstein

The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin combines temporary exhibitions with a permanent exhibition about Eutin during its heyday around 1800. The Eutin Castle Museum offers a different perspective: it lies directly on the Great Eutin Lake and is surrounded by a landscaped garden. Exhibitions at Cismar Monastery change over time; concerts are held in the vaulted hall during the winter months. The Lensahn Museum Farm focuses on work in the past and rural life. More than 4,600 historical exhibits are on display there.

Archaeological history is also part of the region’s cultural offering. The Oldenburg Wall in Oldenburg in Holstein is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most significant archaeological monuments. Using excavation finds and reconstructions, the Oldenburg Wall Museum presents the history of the ring fortification and the Slavs in Ostholstein. The Eutin Festival offers culture in the open air during the summer, staging a variety of operas and operettas each year. The cultural offerings therefore also vary by season: concerts at Cismar during the winter months and open-air performances by the Eutin Festival in summer.

Landscape and Outdoor Activities

The Eutin Lake Circular Trail runs along the Great Eutin Lake, partly right by the shore and partly along natural paths through the forest. Along the way, there are views of Eutin, Eutin Castle and the castle gardens. On Fehmarn, a one-kilometre nature trail in the Wallnau Waterbird Reserve leads through the nature conservation area. Hiking, cycling, wildlife watching and nature discovery are all possible at Bungsberg. An observation platform is located on the telecommunications tower there, 42 metres above the mast; if you plan to visit, check access in advance.

At the Natureum Steinwarder Nature Experience Park in Heiligenhafen, children and adults can experience nature with all their senses. The coast also offers a variety of attractions: a nearly seven-kilometre stretch of fine sandy beach connects Haffkrug and Scharbeutz. In Haffkrug, the Fishing Experience Trail along the promenade uses information boards and interactive features to explain the area’s former fishing industry and Baltic Sea fish species.

More Experiences on the Water

You can explore the Fishing Experience Trail in Haffkrug independently. At eight stations, stories and tales from an audio guide can be accessed using QR codes. Those more interested in the underwater world will find more than 1,000 marine animals in over 40 display aquariums at the Fehmarn Marine Centre; together, they hold 700,000 litres of seawater. For an active experience on the water, the water-ski cableway in Süsel offers beginner courses every day. As operating hours may change, it is a good idea to check the schedule before visiting.
