Fehmarnsund offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the natural beach with views of the Fehmarnsund Bridge, the signposted SundbrĂĽcke Tour and an approximately 2.5-kilometre stretch of beach along the Via Scandinavica. There is also the Werfthafen, located within sight of the bridge. This means you can discover the area through its beach, landmark structure, cycling route, pilgrimage trail or harbour, without combining these different themes into a single tour. When choosing a destination and accommodation, the main question is which focus you want to shape your stay.
The Fehmarnsund Bridge as a landmark
The Fehmarnsund Bridge is the landmark of the island of Fehmarn. Since it opened on 30 April 1963, it has connected the southern part of the island with mainland Schleswig-Holstein. It has been listed as a protected monument since 1999. These two dates have different roles: 1963 marks the bridge’s opening, while 1999 marks the start of its protected status. In this way, the connection between the island and the mainland and the protected status of the structure offer two perspectives on the same bridge. At Fehmarnsund beach, it forms part of the view across the natural beach. If you are interested in structures, you can connect the view from the shore with these historical milestones.
Natural beach with views of the bridge
Fehmarnsund beach is mostly sandy, with fine sand; there are also stony areas, particularly at the water’s edge. The ground is therefore not the same everywhere. Parking is available just behind the small dike in the village. The beach is also an unsupervised natural beach: there is no lifeguard service. If you require supervision at the beach, take this difference into account when planning. This lets you consider the character of the beach, local parking options and the view of the bridge alongside the conditions on site.
Distinguishing the cycling route from the pilgrimage trail
For cyclists, the signposted SundbrĂĽcke Tour leads to Fehmarnsund and the Fehmarnsund Bridge. The Via Scandinavica offers a different perspective: it reaches Fehmarnsund after an approximately 2.5-kilometre stretch along the beach. There, pilgrims on foot rejoin the signposted OH 8 cycle route. The approximate distance refers to the stretch along the beach, not to the entire Via Scandinavica. The two route descriptions answer different planning questions: for the SundbrĂĽcke Tour, the destination and cycling route are key; for the Via Scandinavica, it is the stretch along the beach and the point where it rejoins OH 8. Check the route conditions before setting out, especially for the route along the beach.
Harbour and water sports
Werfthafen Fehmarnsund is within sight of the Fehmarnsund Bridge, well sheltered and yet close to the Fehmarnsund shipping channel. Its shelter, proximity to the channel and views of the bridge give this harbour a different perspective from the natural beach. Fehmarnsund Harbour is one of five marinas on Fehmarn. Kitemonkey Kiteschule is a water sports provider in Fehmarnsund. Alongside the beach and routes, the harbour and water sports are therefore additional points of interest to consider when planning a stay.
