Rantum brings together different facets of the Sylt coast: nature and birdwatching take centre stage at the Rantum Basin, while the North Sea beach and Wadden Sea offer further highlights for a stay. Visitors choosing the town for a getaway can enjoy circular walks, beach strolls, the Wadden Sea and events.

Between the North Sea beach and the Wadden Sea

In Rantum, the fine sandy west beach on the North Sea and the Wadden Sea on the eastern side lie close to one another. At the island’s narrowest point, the open sea and the Wadden Sea are only around 600 metres apart. Rantum also offers nine kilometres of North Sea beach, ideal for long walks. This gives visitors the choice of walks beside the open sea and views across the Wadden Sea, two distinct coastal experiences.

The Rantum Basin adds a unique natural area to this coastal landscape: the nature reserve provides feeding and resting grounds for tens of thousands of birds. Visitors can visit the area year-round. Check current access arrangements before your visit.

Circular walks and nature watching

An approximately nine-kilometre circular dyke path around the Rantum Basin leads through the reserve’s natural landscape and allows visitors to observe birds almost undisturbed. Those who want to focus on the scenery and wildlife while out walking will find a clearly defined circular route here. The “RUN ums Rantumbecken” run is different: it is about ten kilometres long and goes around the nature reserve. Check event dates and participation requirements in advance.

The “Durch die Rantumer Dünen” circular route is another way to explore the landscape. It passes through the “Rantumer Dünen” nature reserve. The dyke path around the basin, the dune route and the run each offer a different focus; for comparison, the key details are the surroundings described and the approximate lengths of the dyke path and the run.

On an approximately 90-minute guided walk across the mudflats in Rantum’s silty mudflats, discover the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site and its inhabitants. These include mussels, snails, lugworms and small crabs. The duration is an approximate guide; check the dates of the mudflat walks before planning.

The harbour and routes through town

Rantum Harbour, a leisure harbour for yachts and motorboats, lies in eastern Rantum on the Wadden Sea. The harbour dries out at low tide. If you plan to visit, it is therefore worth taking the tide level into account.

The “Best of Rantum” route links several stops on a single described circuit: it runs from Rantum Harbour along the edge of the Rantum Basin to the west beach, then back to the harbour via the town centre, Wadden Sea and dyke. It can also be started at the Rantum, Campingplatz stop on SVG bus route 2. Check the latest bus information before planning your journey around it.

Events and other places to visit

The thatched Kursaal Rantum is an event venue. The “Rantum lacht!” cabaret series is held there regularly; programmes may vary between dates. The Meerkabarett in Sylt/Rantum presents annual programmes of music, comedy and cabaret. It is located next to the Sylt Quelle hall. If an event is a deciding factor in your trip, check the latest dates and venue details.

The Day Spa Rantum is a branch of the Syltness Center. As services may change, it is advisable to check the current offerings before visiting. An information terminal at the Rantum Tourist Information Office provides information about Rantum and the island of Sylt, even in the early morning or late evening. The terminal can be used to book an e-bike, e-car or e-scooter; availability may change.
