Neumünster offers a wide variety of discoveries: at the Tuch + Technik Museum, you can explore the history of an ancient craft; Dosenmoor has a network of well-laid-out paths with observation platforms and an educational trail. There is also neoclassical architecture, a zoo and hands-on insights into candle-making. You can tailor your visit to culture, nature or outdoor activities.

Textile History on Display

The Tuch + Technik Museum tells the story of spinners, weavers and cloth makers, as well as the development of an age-old craft from its beginnings to the present day. A particularly tangible way to explore it is through the imposing machines from the era of industrial cloth production: they process raw wool and spin yarn. Demonstrations take place at set times. So if you would like to see the machines in action, check the demonstration schedule before your visit.

The WachsFlecken workshop offers a different kind of hands-on experience. Visitors can see how candles are made up close; methods include dipping and pouring. While the museum presents textile work in its historical context, the focus here is on the practical craft of candle-making.

Church, Historic Building and City Tours

Vicelin Church is in the heart of Neumünster. The building was designed by Copenhagen’s Chief Building Director, Christian Frederik Hansen, and constructed between 1829 and 1834 as a strictly neoclassical Protestant church. The Caspar von Saldern House is Neumünster’s oldest historic building.

If you would like to explore Neumünster on foot, consider the free walking tours of the city centre. They usually last two hours. Tours are offered seasonally, so check in advance which ones are available when you visit.

Outdoors: Dosenmoor and a Cycling Tour

Dosenmoor has a network of well-laid-out paths with observation platforms and an informative educational trail. Most of the area lies within Neumünster, though parts of the moor extend beyond the city limits. The paths, viewpoints and information make it possible to explore the moorland landscape and learn more about it.

For a longer bike ride, try the Northern Cycling Loop. It starts and ends in Neumünster and is 47 kilometres long. The route passes through Einfeld, Bordesholm, Bissee, Groß Buchwald, Negenharrie, Großharrie and Tasdorf.

Discover Animals and Sculptures

Neumünster Zoo is home to around 700 animals from a total of 100 mammal, bird and reptile species across an area of 24 hectares. The zoo also has a large adventure playground for children. The paths between the spacious animal enclosures are wheelchair accessible.

Gerisch Park offers another way to engage with art: the “Gerisch Park” app takes you on a poetic, lyrical tour of the sculptures and also offers a virtual tour from home. You can explore the works either through the audio tour or virtually.

Getting There and Getting Around
