Basthorst brings together two distinctive periods in history: St. Marien is a 19th-century Neo-Gothic fieldstone church, while Gut Basthorst has its origins in a medieval Schack estate. Markets, cultural and equestrian events, and the estate’s landscape offer further reasons to visit. If you are planning a stay, you can focus on the estate’s history and event dates and consider staying overnight directly at Gut Basthorst. Rooms and holiday apartments are available there; check availability before your trip.

Church and estate: several centuries of history

St. Marien Church was built between 1857 and 1859 as a Neo-Gothic fieldstone structure, after the older church was demolished in 1856. This earlier church was first mentioned in 1319. The west tower is 43 metres tall; historical furnishings include a brass lectern dating from 1651. The building and its furnishings thus bring together different points in history.

Gut Basthorst is an 800-year-old cultural monument. The history of the estate complex stretches from the 13th-century medieval Schack estate to buildings dating from the 17th to the 20th century. The complex includes the three-winged manor house, whose core dates to around 1750. There was a fortification around 1640. After it was demolished, a park was created in the 18th century; the former fortification layout can still be made out by the northern moat.

Estate, landscape and events

The grounds include farmland and woodland, springs, streams and hedgerows. These landscape features complement the historical perspective on the church, estate complex and manor house. Gut Basthorst welcomes visitors. Guided tours of the estate grounds explain the estate’s history; arrangements must be made in advance.

Gut Basthorst regularly hosts markets and small craft businesses. Its traditional spring, autumn and Christmas markets attract many thousands of visitors every year. If you would like to plan your visit around a particular event, check the dates in advance.
