A half-timbered building dating from 1787 and concerts in a 19th-century riding hall give Roseburg distinct historical highlights. There is also the history of the settlement by the Gethsbek and MĂĽhlenteich, paths around the village and the Buddhist meditation centre Haus der Stille. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between buildings, events held on specific dates and recurring activities: park visits during the festival, seminars and the walking group each have their own arrangements.

Fachhallenkate and local history

The listed Fachhallenkate stands at Wotersener Weg 1 in Wotersen, within the municipality of Roseburg. It dates from 1787 and is a two-post half-timbered building with a pitched roof and half-hipped gables. The courtyard-facing façade features oak timber framing with “Wilder Mann” motifs. It also has a natural-stone plinth and side walls that have been partly renewed in brick.

The Fachhallenkate preserves a clearly legible historical layout. Its particular significance relates both to Roseburg’s 18th-century history and to the regional history of Lauenburg. The village’s former connection with Gut Wotersen is also part of its history: Roseburg was historically important to the estate because of its watermill.

Roseburg’s historic settlement pattern was a small, elongated settlement beside the Gethsbek and the Mühlenteich. The settlement’s form and the history of the mill tell different stories about the place: one describes the settlement’s location by the waterways, while the other reflects Roseburg’s historical importance to Gut Wotersen.

Wotersen: castle, film and music

Schloss Wotersen is a Baroque estate surrounded by parkland. Wotersen is also known as a filming location for the TV series “Das Erbe der Guldenburgs”. Concerts for the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival are held at Gut Wotersen in a 19th-century riding hall. The estate park is open to visitors during the festival’s rural music events. If you are planning to visit the park, check the dates of these events.

Haus der Stille and planning a seminar

Haus der Stille is a Buddhist meditation centre in Roseburg and is considered one of Germany’s oldest Buddhist meditation centres. It is open to all Buddhist schools; you do not need to identify with Buddhist ideas or principles to take part in seminars. Seminars are held there for almost the entire year. If a seminar is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates and the programme’s current availability.

Walking and cycling

A regular walking group sets off from the Mühlenteich on Thursdays to explore paths in and around Roseburg. No registration is required. The Schloss-Wotersen cycle loop turns towards Roseburg at Siebeneichen and continues to Wotersen. The two options differ in format: the walking group offers a regular meeting time and place, while the cycle route provides a sequence of place names for orientation. Before setting out, check the walking group’s current schedule or the cycle loop route.
