The Müssen Sculpture Park is a cultural venue in Müssen. The signposted entrance starts opposite Am Sande 24. This makes it possible to plan the park as a specific local place to visit. The events programme may change; if a date or event is important to your visit, check the latest information about it.
Cycling in the region
The Old Salt Road is a long-distance cycle route of around 90 kilometres along the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. It connects Lauenburg and Mölln with Travemünde. This provides a longer route following the canal, alongside a selection of shorter cycling tours or those following different routes: the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park has four signposted cycling tours. The specific route and your own stage planning are key when choosing between these options. As route details and signage may change, it is advisable to check your planned route before setting off.
Forests, lakes and nature watching
In the wider travel destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg, 26 percent of the district’s area is forest; it also has 48 lakes. The district is also home to the Sachsenwald, the largest contiguous forest in Schleswig-Holstein.
The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park lies in the heart of the Duchy of Lauenburg. It covers an area about 35 by 17 kilometres in size and provides a habitat for kingfishers, white-tailed eagles and cranes, among other species. Visitors can hike, cycle, canoe and swim in the forest lakes there. The nature park has hiking trails, observation towers, educational trails and rest areas; since 1960, it has been designated a protected area for visitors to enjoy. This offers several ways to explore the landscape: getting active on trails, activities on the water and spending time by the lakes.
The observation tower on Lake Mechow is also a good place to watch waterbirds. With a little luck, you may spot a white-tailed eagle there. This is a possibility, not a guaranteed sighting; anyone wishing to watch birds can make the tower a specific focus of their excursion plans.
Culture and guided insights
The regional cultural offering covers a range of subjects. At the Elbe Shipping Museum in Lauenburg/Elbe, the interactive, three-storey “People-Model-Machine” exhibition showcases shipping. Visitors can get hands-on with models and experimental stations. The District Museum of the Duchy of Lauenburg in Ratzeburg has a different focus: its exhibits cover the history of the Dukes of Lauenburg and the inner-German border. The museums therefore offer different points of interest for a stay in the wider travel destination of the Duchy of Lauenburg.
Those who would like to explore nature and cultural history together can join guided excursions in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park with experts on the local flora, fauna and history of the district. You should check individual dates separately. The Canal Summer of Culture also takes place during a specific period: the cultural festival is held every summer and lasts four weeks. Check that year’s programme for your visit.
Regional rail planning and accommodation
Büchen is relevant for rail planning at district level: the rail hub connects the Duchy of Lauenburg district to the long-distance rail network via the Hamburg–Schwerin–Berlin and Lübeck–Lüneburg routes. Check current timetables separately before planning your journeys.
The sculpture park is the specific place to visit in Müssen; the cycling, nature and museum destinations are part of the wider region. Take the destinations you actually want to visit into account when choosing accommodation, and plan for each one individually.
