Lehmrade is surrounded by core zones of the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park. The Hellbachtal Nature Reserve lies west of the village. The Oldenburger See Nature Reserve borders Lehmrade to the north and is one of the largest crane roosting areas in northern Germany. Lehmrade is considered a predominantly rural recreation area for Mölln and the wider Lübeck and Hamburg region. Nature reserves and trails are therefore central to planning a trip, while the individual landscapes offer different natural features.

Lakes, Moorland, and Protected Landscapes

The Krebssee is located in the Hellbachtal valley, with visibility in the water reaching up to seven metres. Water conditions may vary seasonally. The Hellbachtal also includes a channel that is about 20 to 30 metres deep. Rare peat mosses, sedges, and marsh calla grow along the shores of the Schwarzsee; the silted-up areas of the Lottsee provide habitat for endangered plant species. The area’s distinctive features therefore range from the clear water of the Krebssee to plant habitats along the shores and in the moorland.

The Bannauer Moor nature reserve lies east of Lehmrade and is associated with the red deer rut. This is a seasonal wildlife feature, while the Oldenburger See, as a crane roosting area, represents another facet of the landscape. Those who make nature reserves the focus of their stay can take these different highlights into account when planning their schedule.

Hiking, Cycling, and Time with Horses

The Hellbachtal has signposted hiking trails of varying lengths. The Kirchenradtour and Mölln Cycle Route 2 cross the Hellbachtal at Adam and Eva. For both types of tour planning, it is advisable to check the route, signage, and trail surfaces locally in advance, as these may change. A roughly five-kilometre section of the historic Old Salt Road runs through the municipality of Lehmrade, adding a historic route to the area’s points of reference.

Another activity is Kranichtal Pferdezeit: no horse riding or prior experience is required. The provider’s terms may change, so check them before your trip. Alongside hiking and cycling routes, this offers experiences with a different focus.
