Behlendorf lies in the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park, directly on the 70-hectare Behlendorf Lake. The water and the village centre offer two distinct focal points: there is a bathing area by the lake, while restored houses—some with thatched roofs—shape the townscape in the village centre. The lake reaches a depth of 15 metres at its deepest point. When planning your trip, you can consider whether to focus on time by the water or on the village’s architectural and church history.

Bathing Area and Lake

The bathing area has parking, a sunbathing lawn and toilets. The seasonal Haus am See kiosk serves regional food and drinks there; check its opening hours before your trip. Stand-up paddleboards, rowing boats and other watercraft are prohibited on Behlendorf Lake and within the bathing area. The small island in the lake is a natural monument and may not be visited. Behlendorf Lake and the Elbe-LĂĽbeck Canal are considered suitable for fishing. If you plan to fish, check the local fishing regulations beforehand.

Village Church and Other Discoveries

Behlendorf Church is part of the parish’s open churches programme and invites visitors to enter for quiet reflection and contemplation. The nave was built of fieldstones in the 13th century. Inside are a Baroque altarpiece as well as glass and wall paintings; some of the wall paintings date from the church’s founding period. The fieldstone construction and Baroque altarpiece therefore reflect different periods of design.

Behlendorf and its surroundings are considered suitable for cycling. The mobile Tour de Grass offers another cultural perspective: it runs from Lübeck to Mölln along the Elbe-Lübeck Canal and includes Behlendorf. The tour combines stories and poems by Günter Grass with comparisons of watercolours and augmented-reality activities. Check in advance whether the app is available and what content it currently offers.

In the district of Hollenbek, a farm shop sells regional products; opening hours and availability may vary. If you are planning to travel by bus on weekdays, you can take route 8770 between Mölln and Lübeck: it stops in Behlendorf on Herrenstraße. Check the timetable before your trip, as the service runs on weekdays.

In the wider Herzogtum Lauenburg destination

The wider Herzogtum Lauenburg destination provides a broader setting through its district-wide landscapes: 26 percent of the district is forest, and it includes 48 lakes. The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park has hiking trails, observation towers, educational trails and rest areas, and has been designated a protected area for experiencing nature since 1960. Activities described there include hiking, cycling, canoeing and swimming in forest lakes; the nature park also has four signposted cycling routes. Guided excursions with experts focus on the district’s wildlife, plant life and cultural history. Check the dates of individual excursions when planning your trip.
