Alkersum offers a cultural highlight in the Museum Kunst der Westküste, along with marked riding trails, marshland and a farm cheese dairy. This means that choosing a place to stay on Föhr can offer more than a single activity: art, exercise and regional produce each add a different dimension. The specific offerings in the village can help you decide which of these will shape your trip.
Art at the Museum Kunst der Westküste
The Museum Kunst der Westküste presents changing exhibitions featuring Scandinavian and German artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. It was founded in 2009 by Frederik Paulsen, whose family came from Alkersum on Föhr. The story of its founding thus also points to the village. The museum garden is home to historic trees and old Föhr rose varieties.
The accessible main exhibition area has an accessible restroom, a lift and ramps. If specific accessibility features are important to you, confirm them before your visit. There are two bicycle parking areas at the museum. Grethjens Gasthof welcomes guests and museum visitors indoors and in the sheltered museum garden. If you plan to visit, check the inn’s offerings separately from the museum visit.
Marshland, riding trails and cycling
Alkersum lies between Föhr’s geest and marsh landscapes; green marsh meadows stretch across the Alkersumer Geest. Rest stops along Alkersumer Marschweg invite you to listen to the sounds of nature and watch the sunset. Rabbits, waterfowl, hares and roe deer live in the marsh areas; hedgerows and rows of trees provide them with places to shelter.
For riders, the village offers marked riding trails, riding stables, indoor arenas and stables. Alkersum is also part of a wider island network for cyclists: Föhr has more than 200 kilometres of cycle paths and five themed routes, with selected routes passing through Alkersum. Check your route before setting out, as the network may change gradually.
Föhr island cheese and farm shop
The Föhrer Inselkäse farm dairy in Alkersum processes milk year-round into seven varieties of cow’s milk cheese. In addition to cheese, the farm shop offers homemade jam and egg liqueur, Föhr eggs, sausage, local wines, pasta, mustard and oils. The selection may change. In summer, a small café adds coffee, sweet treats and freshly made cheese sandwiches to the farm shop’s offerings. For travel planning, it is important to distinguish between year-round cheese production and the seasonal café offering.
Local club life
Alkersum’s Hualewjonken organises guest ring riding, card evenings and gatherings with other Hualewjonken clubs on Föhr. If you would like to attend an event, check locally which activities are open to guests.
Getting to Föhr
