Visitors to Wöhrden can explore the village’s history along the cultural trail and through selected buildings. The village walk explains notable sights in the town centre; St. Nicolai Church and the nearby Materialienhaus add further historical highlights. Wöhrden is considered one of the oldest terp villages in the marshland of Dithmarschen.

Wöhrden in the Marshland of Dithmarschen

The municipality of Wöhrden is part of the 710-hectare Speicherkoog Dithmarschen (Nordkoog) Landscape Conservation Area. Another link to the landscape is the historic location of the former Siegeskirche: it stood on Dithmarschen’s highest terp, 6.24 metres above sea level. The village’s history thus connects its place in the marsh region with a specific elevation and location.

A Walk Through the Town Centre

The Wöhrden cultural trail is a village walk that explains notable sights in the town centre. Its focus is on viewing the town centre as a whole. It offers a clear starting point for planning: visitors interested in local history will find a walk with explained sights. The church and the Materialienhaus add specific architectural and decorative details to this cultural and historical focus.

The Church and Its Historic Furnishings

The history of St. Nicolai Church goes back to a predecessor building. The parish built the Siegeskirche after Wöhrden’s victory over the Count of Holstein in 1319; it was later replaced by St. Nicolai Church. The former church stood on Dithmarschen’s highest terp, 6.24 metres above sea level. The Anthonius Wilde organ, built in 1593, was transferred from the predecessor building to St. Nicolai Church. The furnishings also include an altar relief from 1613, a chandelier from 1643, and a wooden suspended baptismal angel from 1788. These dated furnishings therefore span the late 16th to the late 18th century.

The Materialienhaus

The Materialienhaus is located near the church and is considered the oldest house in Dithmarschen. It was built in 1519 as a windowless oak storehouse with a thatched roof. From 1778 to 1788, it served as an emergency church. In addition to this building and use history, the inscription “Waterbörs” is associated with an evening meeting place for neighbours and friends. The house’s historical associations thus range from its function as a storehouse and its later use as an emergency church to the social significance of the inscription.

Cultural History in Dithmarschen

In the wider destination of Dithmarschen, the Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf offers a regional focus. It covers 1,200 years of Dithmarschen, from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. This offers a different timescale from Wöhrden’s local history: in Wöhrden, the focus is on the cultural trail, church, and Materialienhaus; at the museum, it is on Dithmarschen’s development over a long period.
