In Wesselburen, local history, the life of playwright Friedrich Hebbel and the culture of cabbage come together. The historic town centre’s street layout offers a particularly vivid glimpse into the town’s history: the layout shown on Johann Mejer’s town map in 1648 is still in place today. The settlement’s history goes back even further. It included farmsteads and fishermen’s houses on raised mounds; the first ring dike was built around 1000.

Discover local history

Historical walking tours lead through Wesselburen, and themed tours are also available. They start at the Tourist Information office in front of the old town hall. The Hebbel Museum is another way to get to know the town through its history. Dedicated to the life and work of the playwright, who was born in Wesselburen, it presents both across ten rooms. Five historically furnished rooms show what life was like in Wesselburen and Vienna.

The museum also has a library with around 6,000 titles, a newspaper archive and research workstations. In addition to presenting Hebbel’s life and work, it therefore offers resources and workstations for in-depth research. If your main interest is literary heritage, the museum is the place to focus on; for architectural history, St. Bartholomew’s Church is another destination.

The church and literary heritage

St. Bartholomew’s is a historic cultural church. Its distinctive onion dome is a landmark visible across the marshland and also serves as a navigation point on the Hebbel Circular Trail. Inside are a Romanesque sandstone baptismal font from the 12th century and a preserved Gothic sacristy. The organ has its own history, too: Johann Hinrich Klapmeyer built it in 1741, and it was reconstructed in the style of its original builder up to 2011.

Free church tours are available on Thursdays from May to September. Historical and themed walking tours of Wesselburen start at the Tourist Information office in front of the old town hall. If a guided tour is an essential part of your plans, check the latest dates in advance.

Cabbage culture at the Kohlosseum

The Kohlosseum combines a farmers’ market with a museum and produces organic vegan sauerkraut. The museum explores the history and present-day cultivation of cabbage, as well as how it is processed. Its exhibits include a reconstruction of a cabbage-cutting machine from Marne. Here, you can learn about both the history of cabbage and how it is processed.

At the Krautwerkstatt, you can take a guided tour that ends with a tasting of the products. Dates and booking conditions may change, so check them before making the visit a firm part of your plans. If you’d rather experience a theme while on the move, the Hebbel Circular Trail and the “Frisians and Dithmarschers” cycling route offer different ways to enjoy an active stay.

On foot, by bike and out into the Wadden Sea

The Hebbel Circular Trail is marked with a feather symbol and uses the church’s onion dome as a navigation point. It is designated for hiking, jogging, Nordic walking and cycling. Check the trail markers before setting off. For cycling and e-bike tours, the “Frisians and Dithmarschers” route is listed as an easy circular tour covering 37.07 kilometres, with Wesselburen’s market square listed as the destination. This gives you a specific distance and difficulty rating to plan around, while the Hebbel Circular Trail accommodates several ways of getting around.

The landscape of the Wesselburen holiday region also extends beyond town life: it offers access to Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. Guided mudflat walks to the sandbanks of Blauort and Isern Hinnerk meet in Wesselburen. Check the latest dates for guided tours when planning your visit. For travel to the area, Wesselburen station provides access to Deutsche Bahn regional services; check timetables and connections before departure.
