Süderdorf combines agricultural settlements with a landscape where geest and moorland alternate. The settlements have retained their distinctive, traditional character. Both the changing rural landscape and the character of the settlements shape the town. The broader travel destination of Dithmarschen also offers its own themes of history, archaeology, the Wadden Sea and regional events.

Rural Landscapes and Horseback Riding

Among Süderdorf’s agricultural settlements, quiet roads and field paths are ideal for extended rides. Anyone wishing to include horseback riding in their stay will find it a fitting focus. The landscape combines an agricultural setting with the changing terrain of geest and moorland; together with the settlements’ preserved character, this creates a rural profile that can be explored through both landscape and local character.

History and Museums in the Broader Travel Destination of Dithmarschen

The Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the farmers’ republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. This broad sweep of time brings together different aspects of regional history. The Dithmarschen Museum Network offers another perspective: it brings together 19 museums, run by both paid staff and volunteers, in eleven locations. St. Andrew’s Church in Weddingstedt is one of the five so-called original parishes in Dithmarschen and adds an example of church history to these regional historical themes.

Hands-On Archaeology

The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park offers a hands-on experience. Activities include flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewellery, making fire and baking bread. The specific programme may vary. The Stone Age Forest is next to the Stone Age Park: this approximately 40-hectare, natural outdoor site is open year-round and free of charge. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check access information in advance. The Stone Age Forest in Albersdorf contains nine original archaeological monuments.

The Wadden Sea and Hiking Trails in Dithmarschen

The Friedrichskoog National Park Station is an information centre with a national park exhibition on the south side of the harbour. From Friedrichskoog, the Wadden Sea Conservation Station looks after the national park in the southern part of Dithmarschen, between Meldorfer Koog and the mouth of the Elbe. The stretch of coast it covers is 30 kilometres long. On guided mudflat walks along the Dithmarschen coast, knowledgeable local national park guides accompany visitors; at low tide, the Wadden Sea’s diverse wildlife becomes visible. Tides and guided tour dates vary, so it is worth checking the schedule when planning.

Hiking routes also differ considerably in length and format. The first stage of the North–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometres long; the entire long-distance trail consists of five stages and runs from Meldorf to Kiel. The “Mötjensee and White-Tailed Eagle” route near Lunden is shorter and forms a circular walk: it is 12.79 kilometres long and classified as an easy circular route for lowland hiking. This offers a choice of different distances, with a clear distinction between a stage and a circular walk.

Regional Events and Cabbage

At the KOHLosseum’s Krautwerkstatt, demonstrations followed by tastings take place from Tuesday to Thursday at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. From 1 November until Easter, only the 2 p.m. demonstration takes place. Check the schedule before visiting. During the Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, the programme across Dithmarschen includes farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sporting and cultural events; individual events and dates are subject to change.
