In Schalkholz, an Ice Age-shaped Geest landscape meets traces from different periods. Push moraines, low-lying areas, and a raised bog give the village a distinctive landscape setting; megalithic tombs, older brick houses, and the Peace Oak tell further chapters of its history. This means you can get to know Schalkholz through both its landscape and its archaeological and historical features.

A Geest landscape with pronounced changes in elevation

Schalkholz lies on an Ice Age push moraine, and the changes in elevation are clearly noticeable on site. A well-preserved hedgerow landscape, gentle hills, and extensive low-lying areas give the region its characteristic Geest landscape. The area is therefore not defined by just one type of terrain, but by a contrast between higher ground and broad, lower-lying stretches.

The Schalkholz ice-tongue basin is a distinctive geological feature. This Ice Age depression is surrounded by push moraines, with a raised bog in the middle. Those interested in how the landscape formed will find two contrasting features here: the basin enclosed by moraines and the ridges that also shape the surrounding area.

Megalithic tombs and traces of the village’s history

The passage grave at Schalkholz is the southernmost example of the oval Nordic passage-grave type. Excavations uncovered Funnel Beaker pottery and a hoard of flint blades. In November 2021, the tomb was moved back to a location near where it was originally found in Schalkholz. The finds belong to prehistory; the relocation is a much later chapter in the monument’s history.

Another archaeological feature is the Schalkholz LA 58 long barrow. It is situated in a small wooded area beside the cycle path from Schalkholz to Linden and is a legally protected cultural monument under Section 8 of Schleswig-Holstein’s 2015 Monument Protection Act. HISTOUR signs mark the long barrow. A bench is available after you explore the wooded area. A well-preserved older Bronze Age burial mound also stands at the western edge of the oak wood near Schalkholz.

Schalkholz is also connected to European megalithic culture: the municipality joined the Megalithic Routes Association on January 1, 2020, and is associated with the European Route of Megalithic Culture. This connection places the local burial sites in a broader cultural context without treating the individual monuments as one and the same.

More recent local history can be seen elsewhere. Numerous yellow brick houses dating from before the First World War have been preserved in Schalkholz. In the village centre, the 1871 Peace Oak stands at a historic road junction. Alongside the prehistoric sites, the village therefore also has buildings and a memorial from later centuries.

Planning excursions

HISTOUR offers a digital travel guide and navigation tool for visitors interested in the history, culture, and landscapes of Dithmarschen. It is designed to help cyclists and day visitors find places of interest in the Eider holiday region, including destinations away from the main roads. The Schalkholz LA 58 long barrow is beside the cycle path from Schalkholz to Linden, where HISTOUR signs point out the monument. Digital navigation for excursions and the signs at the long barrow thus provide two different sources of information.

For travel planning, current timetables for Schalkholz are available from Deutsche Bahn and Dithmarschen-Bus. Timetables may change, so check the information before making your plans.

Cultural themes in Dithmarschen

Other places in the wider destination of Dithmarschen offer their own regional perspectives. The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen—from the wealth of the farmers’ republic to rural everyday life in the 1960s. The Stone Age Forest in Albersdorf offers another perspective on prehistory and includes nine original archaeological monuments. Both examples are part of Dithmarschen and complement Schalkholz’s local history with distinct regional themes.
