In Hemme, St. Mary’s Church is a major cultural landmark. The whitewashed brick building, with its Gothic features, dates from the 14th century and is designated HISTOUR site L20. Its rich historic furnishings are particularly distinctive, with pieces spanning several centuries. The church’s construction date and surviving works make Hemme’s cultural history tangible in a single building.

St. Mary’s: Architecture and Furnishings

The historic ensemble includes a wooden bell tower, a Renaissance pulpit, an early Baroque altar and a baptismal font dating from around 1630. It also features 121 biblical panels, created around 1650. The pews also date from the 16th century; the pulpit is dated 1567, the carved altar 1622 and the triumphal cross 1697. These dates show that the furnishings were not created in a single period: alongside the 14th-century church building are works from several later centuries.

Dithmarschen Beyond the Church

Beyond the church, Dithmarschen offers further cultural perspectives. The Dithmarschen State Museum in Meldorf traces 1,200 years of history, from the wealth of the peasant republic to rural daily life in the 1960s. The Dithmarschen museum network brings together 19 museums run by professional and volunteer staff across eleven locations. Compared with Hemme’s church, the scale shifts from a single building with historic furnishings to a museum network spanning multiple locations and subjects.

Dithmarschen’s Stone Age attractions offer a different focus. The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park offers hands-on activities such as flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewelry, fire-making and bread baking; the program may vary. The Stone Age Forest in Albersdorf contains nine original archaeological monuments. The nature-rich open-air grounds next to the Stone Age Park cover around 40 hectares and are permanently free to access. Check access information before your visit.

Trails, Mudflats and Seasonal Events

Dithmarschen can also be explored through its varied trails and nature experiences. The first stage of the North–Baltic Sea Hiking Trail runs through Dithmarschen and is just under 40 kilometers long; the entire long-distance trail leads from Meldorf to Kiel in five stages. Another option is the “Mötjensee and White-tailed Eagle” route near Lunden: an easy, 12.79-kilometer circular trail for lowland hiking. The long-distance hiking stage and the shorter, easy circular route can thus be compared by length, format and stated difficulty.

On the Dithmarschen coast, guided mudflat walks at low tide reveal the rich life of the Wadden Sea. They are led by National Park mudflat guides with local knowledge and subject expertise. Tides and tour dates vary, so check the schedule for a specific tour in advance.

Culinary experiences also have set times: the KOHLosseum Krautwerkstatt offers demonstrations followed by tastings on Tuesdays through Thursdays at 2, 3 and 4 p.m. From November 1 until Easter, only the 2 p.m. demonstration takes place. Check the specific date before your visit. During the Dithmarschen Cabbage Days, events across Dithmarschen include a varied program of farmers’ markets, town festivals, and sports and cultural events. Individual dates and program items may change, so plan your trip around the current event dates.
