Epenwöhrden can be explored through several themes: the history of settlement on terps, the marsh and moorland landscape, and memorial sites commemorating the Battle of Hemmingstedt. There is also a distinctive English oak, local traditions and a cycling tour connected with the moorland. This lets you choose different focuses for your stay—from early traces of settlement to a tour through the landscape.

Marsh, Moorland and Early Settlement

Epenwöhrden lies in the broad marshland north of Meldorf. A large part of the area east of the B5 is moorland. These two landscape descriptions emphasize different aspects: the marsh describes the wider surroundings, while the moorland area refers to a specific side of the B5.

The local history has its roots in settlement on raised terps. Traces of settlement date from the 4th to the 8th century; the first documented mention of Epenwöhrden dates to 1447. These are two different points in time: early traces of settlement on the one hand, and the first recorded mention on the other.

Memorial Sites to the Battle of Hemmingstedt

The monument at Dusenddüwelswarf consists of a glacial erratic commemorating the Battle of Hemmingstedt. An information pavilion at Dusenddüwelswarf explains the events of the battle. The memorial stone was erected on February 17, 1900—exactly 400 years after the battle. Its historical significance extends beyond the monument: the battle preserved Dithmarschen’s de facto independence for 59 years.

Road signs are also useful for finding your way: Dusenddüwelswarf is signposted from the B5 between Meldorf and Hemmingstedt. Check the signs again before setting out.

Climate Tree and Picnic Stop

At the intersection of Epenwöhrdener-Moor and the L147 stands an English oak known as Germany’s first climate tree: Climate Tree No. 1. A large glacial erratic marks the tree’s location and, at the same time, the center of Dithmarschen. The spot serves as a picnic destination with views across the Dithmarschen landscape. Seating and bicycle racks are also provided; check before your visit whether these amenities are still available.

This place is different from the historical sites: here, the defining features are the views of the landscape and the opportunity to take a break. If you are traveling by bicycle, you can take the existing bicycle racks into account when planning; they are a specific amenity at the climate tree site.

Traditions and a Cycling Tour Through the Moorland

The annual children’s bird-shooting festival is a tradition held at the end of the school year. The children’s games include bicycle ring jousting, skittles, golf and ring jousting on a carousel. Epenwöhrden also maintains the traditions of Wegeverpachtung, a senior citizens’ outing and a local festival. For specific event dates, it is a good idea to check the latest information before your trip.

The “From the Moorland to the Geest” cycling tour passes through protected moorland landscapes and, on the return leg, through villages including Epenwöhrden. It complements the individual local sites with a route focused on the landscape. Plan your tour using up-to-date route information that suits your needs.

More Cultural Attractions in Dithmarschen

Dithmarschen also offers cultural attractions and experiences in their own right. The Dithmarscher Landesmuseum in Meldorf takes visitors through 1,200 years of Dithmarschen history, from the wealth of the peasant republic to everyday rural life in the 1960s. The museum’s historical span provides a different focus from Epenwöhrden’s early settlement history.

The Dithmarschen Stone Age Park complements this historical theme with hands-on activities such as flint knapping, archery, making Stone Age jewelry, lighting fires and baking bread. These activities depend on the program; check current dates and activities before your visit. Together, the museum and the Stone Age Park offer two different ways to explore Dithmarschen: a historical overview and practical activities.
