Burg (Dithmarschen) combines nature trails with insights into local and regional history. Around the nature experience area and the Burg Forest Museum, forests, heathland and water take centre stage; the Burg Museum and cultural history tours of the town offer a different perspective. You can choose what to focus on depending on whether you prefer hiking, exploring nature or learning about the town’s history.

Burg has its own railway station. Regular buses connect the town with nearby villages and larger places such as BrunsbĂĽttel and Meldorf. If you are travelling by public transport, check the timetables before your trip.

Forest, Water and Trails

The Burg nature experience area covers around 30 hectares of woodland, with springs, ponds, lakes, orchards, moraine slopes and heathland. The mix of woodland, bodies of water and open landscape features gives the area a variety of natural focal points. Burg lies directly on the Kiel Canal; the surrounding landscape also includes marshland and geest, as well as water, forest and meadows.

The nature experience area offers opportunities to discover rare animal and plant species and to watch bats in flight in the evening. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed, so treat them as a possible extra rather than a fixed part of your itinerary.

A mostly accessible circular trail and hiking trails through mixed forest and heathland run near the Burg Forest Museum. Check the specific accessibility conditions before your trip. There is also a forest nature trail right next to the museum. You can choose between trails through the landscape and an introduction to the museum’s nature-related topics.

Six signposted circular hiking trails in and around Burg range from 4.8 to 19 kilometres. They start at the fountain on Holzmarkt. The range of distances helps you choose a route of a suitable length; distance information does not replace checking the route on site. Check the signposting before setting out, too.

Museums and Local History

The Burg Forest Museum uses taxidermy specimens to illustrate various habitats in the region. Its exhibition covers nature conservation, species protection, hunting, geology, palaeontology and regional archaeology. The topics therefore range from protecting species and habitats to the history of the Earth and the region’s past. Individual exhibition content may change over time.

The Burg Museum focuses on a different historical perspective: it presents the history of shipping in Burg in the 19th century. Cultural history tours of the town cover Bökelnburg and explain why Bismarck gave Burg three oak trees. Tours are available on specific dates; check the schedule if you would like to plan one.

Water Activities and Seasonal Offers

If you would like to explore the Burger Au from the water, you can do so from the Burg jetty using your own canoe or stand-up paddleboard. Check in advance how access to the water and equipment are arranged. Another option is Erlebnisfreibad Burg, a heated outdoor woodland pool next to the nature experience area. Facilities and operating conditions may change seasonally; check before visiting.
