Büsum offers various ways to explore the Wadden Sea and its maritime history. The town has been a partner of Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park since 2003. Guided mudflat walks combine exploring the Wadden Sea with insights into its natural surroundings. The landscape itself is also constantly changing: the tidal channels in the Wadden Sea off Büsum can shift by up to 100 metres within a year.
Wadden Sea, Perlebucht and cycling
At the Perlebucht family lagoon, Watt'n Insel offers swimming, water sports, beach soccer and beach volleyball. Its landscaped setting includes dunes, sheltered hollows and natural areas with vegetation similar to salt marshes. Swimming and water sports offer a different focus from a mudflat walk, which centres on the Wadden Sea’s natural surroundings.
You can also experience Büsum from different perspectives by bike: routes take you along the North Sea, through the surrounding meadows and fields, or around the fishing village. Cultural sights and natural features add to these impressions. When planning your visit, you can choose between different interests: activities at Watt'n Insel, observing nature on the mudflats, or exploring the landscape and town by bike.
Ships and fishing in the harbour
Historic ships are moored in the museum harbour all year round, including the gaff-rigged cutters Margaretha and Fahrewohl and the lifeboat Rickmer Bock. A walk along the museum harbour offers a glimpse into the history of merchant shipping and displays historic fishing equipment. The harbour’s story comes to life not only through its ships, but also through traces of past shipping and fishing.
The town’s fleet of shrimp cutters is based in the fishing harbour. You can buy fresh shrimp directly from the cutters. Excursion boats also depart from Büsum harbour for day trips to Heligoland and fishing trips at sea. Historic ships and fishing equipment, shrimp fishing, and trips out on the water are distinct maritime themes you can explore according to your interests.
Local history at the museum by the sea
The museum by the sea is dedicated to shrimp fishing in Büsum and the history of the seaside resort since 1837. Interactive activity stations and a play area are among its features, as is a historic 1920 shrimp cutter displayed outdoors. Other exhibits include an original shrimp-sorting machine, a wheelhouse visitors can enter, and a film showing a trip out to sea. Alongside the history of the seaside resort, the museum focuses on working practices and experiences from fishing and seafaring.
All floors of Watt'n Hus that are open to visitors are step-free and wheelchair accessible.
