Schmölen brings together nature, local history and activities on the water. The Planitz Forest stretches out just behind the upper village; in the village are the Ursula Chapel and the Waidmannsheil forestry farm with its wood trail. There is also the Mulde ferry and the recreational rowing offered by the Wurzener Rudervereinigung Schwarz-Gelb e.V. This gives you a choice of different things to focus on when planning your visit: forest trails, a historic site or activities on the Mulde. You can tailor your stay to whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or also include the chapel, forestry farm and water-based activities.

Forest and Mulde River

The Planitz Forest stretches out just behind Schmölen’s upper village and offers opportunities for long hikes on foot or by bicycle. A hike from Beucha through the Planitz Forest heads northeast towards Schmölen. If you are considering this hike, check the current trail conditions in advance.

The ferry lets you cross the Mulde between Schmölen and Dehnitz. It can carry up to 16 people with bicycles per crossing. This gives groups who wish to use the connection together with their bicycles a clear indication of capacity. The ferry may operate seasonally, so check its current availability before your trip.

Ursula Chapel and Village Festival

The Ursula Chapel in Schmölen was built in the mid-15th century as a private chapel for the estate. Its original function gives the building a clear historical connection. Today, all residents of the municipality of Bennewitz celebrate their annual village festival on the grounds around the chapel. The building’s history and the recurring community festival thus share the same grounds, but serve different roles: the chapel reflects its original function, while the festival is part of community life today.

Wood Trail and Waidmannsheil Forestry Farm

The Waidmannsheil forestry farm adds a wood trail and other activities to the nature theme. The trail is located in Schmölen on the forestry farm grounds. Visitors are also invited to enjoy a leisurely meal and attend a changing programme of events there. The adventure playground, spacious outdoor grounds and wood trail offer children plenty of variety. Adults can relax with food and drink in the barbecue hut or on the sunny south-facing terrace overlooking the Planitz Forest. If a particular event is the deciding factor, check the exact date before you travel.

Recreational Rowing in Schmölen

Recreational rowing is another of the village’s water-based activities: the Wurzener Rudervereinigung Schwarz-Gelb e.V. offers it from its boathouse in Schmölen. This is a different option to consider when planning than crossing the Mulde by ferry. While the ferry connects Schmölen and Dehnitz, the club’s offering centres on rowing. You can distinguish between the two options by purpose when deciding whether to include water-based activities in your trip.
