The city park makes Tangerhütte an appealing destination for park and culture enthusiasts: Its 12 hectares are home to two castles, a tea house and a mausoleum. The local history museum adds historical insight into the town; trails in the nature area, the seasonal outdoor swimming pool and asparagus season offer further highlights.

City Park and Castle Architecture

The city park was laid out in 1872 in the English and French garden styles. The New Castle stands in the southeastern part of the park, built in 1909 in the Italian style. While the gardens combine two styles, the castle follows a different model—a useful comparison for anyone interested in architectural and garden history.

Replicas of sphinxes stand on either side of the staircase; the coat of arms of the Wagenführ von Arnim family is above the portal. The city park’s cast-iron pavilion received a gold medal at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair.

Local History at the Museum

The local history museum presents local historical topics across twelve themed rooms. The development of Tangerhütte from Väthen to a district town provides the historical context; industrial heritage, the founders of the ironworks, agriculture and crafts add a range of other subjects.

One unusually specific subject concerns Hans Euler: the local history museum credits him with building 16,517 ships in bottles.

Nature, Outdoor Swimming and Asparagus Season

Trails and footbridges wind through the landscape in the nature area around Tangerhütte. The routes are considered suitable for hiking and cycling.

The seasonal Tangerhütte outdoor swimming pool also welcomes visitors from surrounding towns; trained lifeguards are part of the facilities. Check opening times and conditions before your visit.

The sandy Geest around Tangerhütte is associated with asparagus cultivation. Fresh asparagus is available in the Altmark from late April until St John’s Day and is served in restaurants; availability varies from year to year. If you are planning a trip specifically during asparagus season, it is worth checking what is currently on offer.
