Lake Kamern offers two ways to experience the area: you can explore it by boat or walk along a trail around it. There is also Schönfeld Lake, viewpoints overlooking different lowland areas, and a landscape of water, forests, meadows, fields and sandy ridges.

Activities by the Lakes and in the Landscape

Cycling, hiking, swimming, fishing and rowing are among the activities available in and around Kamern’s lake and Elbe-Havel landscape. The options range from getting around on foot or by bike to activities on the water. When planning your trip, you can consider which focus best suits your stay: time by the lake, exploring the landscape or observing nature.

Lake Kamern can be explored by boat or walked around along a trail. It is connected to the Havel via the Trübengraben. The circular trail focuses on the shoreline, while exploring by boat focuses on the lake itself. The lake landscape also includes Schönfeld Lake, wooded shores and fish-rich waters. The lakes are located in the Lower Havel Landscape Conservation Area.

Waterways and Nature Watching

The plant life of Lake Kamern is another distinctive feature: its clear-water ecology includes aquatic plants such as water soldier, pondweeds and frogbit. Floodplain forests, oxbow lakes, smaller bodies of water and lakes provide breeding and resting habitats for waterbirds. This means the natural setting extends beyond the two lakes. Waterbirds are an obvious focus for nature watching, while walks and the route around the lake turn your attention to the landscape.

The viewpoints offer different directions: from Weinberge, the view extends west towards the Elbe lowlands, while from Lärchenberg it extends east towards the Havel lowlands. The Kamern Hills form a prominent local ridge. Those wishing to compare viewpoints will find two clearly distinct directions here, as well as another way to experience Kamern’s landscape.

Views and Local Heritage

At the entrance to Kamern stands the Hedemicke, a protected pine trunk of natural and historical significance associated with the Frau Harke legend. It adds a local nature and history theme to the lakes and viewpoints. Kamern thus offers not only water and landscape but also a tradition linked to a specific entrance to the village.

Cyclists can also explore the wider region: the approximately 500-kilometre Altmark circular cycle route passes through, among other places, Kamern, Havelberg and Werben (Elbe) in the district of Stendal. The route places Kamern within a wider regional cycling network without prescribing a particular stage or day’s itinerary.

A Historical Highlight in the Wider Stendal Destination

History adds a distinctive dimension to the wider Stendal destination. From 1373 to 1378, Tangermünde Castle served as an auxiliary residence of Emperor Charles IV, alongside the Hradčany in Prague. Tangermünde is considered a tourist attraction, with a fascinating town skyline and a very well-preserved medieval town centre. In this way, Kamern’s water and landscape themes contrast with a distinct cultural and historical highlight in the wider Stendal destination.
