Staßfurt offers two very different highlights for a stay: the Town and Mining Museum explores the town’s history and potash mining, while the seasonal Strandsolbad offers an outdoor swimming experience in salt-rich water. Which side you focus on depends on whether culture and industrial history or a visit to an outdoor swimming pool is more important to you. For planning, the season is especially important for the Strandsolbad; opening conditions and fees may change.

Town History and Mining at the Museum

The Town and Mining Museum presents the history of Staßfurt and the history of potash mining. The exhibits include restored mining machinery, as well as large equipment and installations from both underground and surface mining, displayed on the museum grounds. Salt production by evaporation and the potash industry are also among the museum’s subjects. This brings the town’s development and mining history together in a specific place; the machinery on display complements the historical perspective with machines and installations.

The museum is linked to the Glück-Auf-Tour and the Salzige Tour, and is also a stop on the Europaradweg R1 and the Romanesque Route. These connections offer different starting points for cultural and route-related interests, but do not constitute a single combined tour. If you are planning a current route, check its course in advance. In the wider Salzlandkreis travel destination, the Romanesque Route has six stops in five towns.

Strandsolbad: A Seasonal Alternative to a Museum Visit

The Strandsolbad is an inland saltwater outdoor swimming pool that was created following a mining subsidence event. Its water has a high salt content. The facilities include a swimming platform, a slide, a children’s playground, and a terrace overlooking the lake. This makes the pool quite different from the museum’s focus: here, the emphasis is on water and spending time outdoors, while the museum focuses on town history and mining technology. The Strandsolbad is seasonal; opening conditions and fees may change. Take the season into account when planning, and check the visitor information for your chosen date.

More to Explore in the Wider Salzlandkreis Travel Destination

In the wider Salzlandkreis travel destination, the Pömmelte Ring Sanctuary offers an archaeological highlight. It is a reconstruction of a ritual site more than 4,000 years old. The 115-meter-wide complex consists of wooden palisade rings, pits, and ramparts; it can be viewed from a nine-meter-high observation platform. The site is freely accessible year-round, except during certain events. Free parking and accessible toilets are also available. As events may be exceptions to free access, check the visitor information for your date.

There are also different points of interest for cycling in the Salzlandkreis. The 3-Flüsse-Radweg is a day tour of around 36 kilometers between Ilberstedt and Hohenerxleben, following the Bode, Saale, and Wipper rivers. Its scenery alternates between riverside landscapes with forests and meadows and elevated farmland with expansive views. The Boderadweg crosses the Salzlandkreis for about 51 kilometers and passes through floodplain landscapes, historic towns, and villages. A tranquil stretch through floodplains with meadows, hedgerows, and old oak trees extends to the Rothenförder weir, built in 1889. The Salzlandkreis thus offers a day tour of around 36 kilometers and a cycling route of about 51 kilometers, each with different landscapes.
