Seeland: lakeside, nature and circular tour
Seeland’s circular tour brings together landscapes, nature experiences and historic stops on a route through six districts. Along the way, you can take in different sides of the region: the water, natural areas and places with a history. Stops along the route include the Froser See bird sanctuary, the Selke River, the shore of Concordia Lake and a viewpoint in Schadeleben. This gives the tour a variety of themes, without reducing it to just one attraction.
Concordia Lake stretches between Schadeleben and Nachterstedt. On its northern shore is a beach area near Schadeleben; the lake is considered a large body of water suitable for tourism. If you are planning a visit to swim or access the shore, check the current situation before your trip. This makes the lake a distinct part of your plans alongside the circular tour’s other landscape and cultural stops.
Historic stops along the route
Destinations on the Seeland circular tour include St. Cyriacus Collegiate Church and the historic water tower in Frose. Schloss Hoym and St. John’s Church are also highlighted along the route. The selection brings together different kinds of cultural sites: a collegiate church, a water tower, a castle and another church. When planning the tour, you can use these names to guide your choice of focus, while nature and lakeside stops also remain part of the route.
A broader regional perspective in the wider destination of Salzlandkreis
The Ringheiligtum Pömmelte, a reconstruction of a cult site more than 4,000 years old, is located in the wider destination of Salzlandkreis. The 115-metre-wide complex includes wooden palisade rings, pits and ramparts; it can be viewed from a nine-metre-high observation platform. It is freely accessible year-round, except during certain events. Free parking and accessible toilets are available. When planning, check whether an event will affect access.
The cycling routes in Salzlandkreis also offer a range of routes and landscapes. The 3-Flüsse-Radweg is a day trip of around 36 kilometres between Ilberstedt and Hohenerxleben, following the Bode, Saale and Wipper rivers. In the central part of Salzlandkreis, it takes in river landscapes with forests and meadows, as well as elevated farmland with sweeping views. The Boderadweg crosses Salzlandkreis for around 51 kilometres and passes through floodplains, historic towns and villages. It runs through a tranquil floodplain of meadows, hedgerows and ancient oaks as far as the Rothenförder Weir, built in 1889. The approximately 36 kilometres are presented as a day trip between two places; the approximately 51 kilometres refer to the Boderadweg’s route through the district.
Other landscape options round out this regional perspective: between Rothenburg in the Saalekreis district and Barby, the Saaleradweg passes through Salzlandkreis and takes in a tranquil river landscape of woodland and meadows. The EL-SA-Tour crosses a sparsely populated part of Salzlandkreis with the largest contiguous forest areas; one section passes through the area belonging to Barby. For a shorter walk, there is a nature trail of around two kilometres in the floodplain forest complex along the Saale below Schloss Plötzkau.
Culture and history in Salzlandkreis
Salzlandkreis is represented on the Romanesque Road with six stops in five towns. In Staßfurt, the town and mining museum showcases the town’s history, salt production and the potash industry. A museum of prehistory and early history is housed in Wasserburg Egeln; regular castle festivals, markets and cultural events are held there. You should check the dates of individual events separately. Schloss Plötzkau also has a museum, spread across several rooms and the tower, covering a range of topics. Thus, archaeology, urban history and castle-related cultural themes sit side by side in the wider Salzlandkreis district.
