The Elbe Cycle Route leads directly to Schönebeck from both sides of the Elbe. There is also a specific hiking route to Bierer Berg and a townscape in which salt history and the Elbe riverbank are closely intertwined. This lets you combine cycling and hiking plans with sightseeing and other activities, without approaching every outing in the same way.

Cycle route and hiking trail as guides

For a cycling trip, the Elbe Cycle Route is a clear starting point: it leads directly to Schönebeck from both sides of the Elbe. A separate hiking route begins at Schönebeck/Bad Salzelmen station and leads past the graduation tower, the small pine wood and Kastanienallee directly to Bierer Berg. If you are travelling on foot, you can use the sequence of these waypoints to plan your route. Trail conditions and access may change; check the information before setting out.

Salt history on the Elbe riverbank and in Bad Salzelmen

On the Schönebeck Elbe riverbank, the salt storehouses form a 133-metre-long, inhabited half-timbered ensemble. The Salt Tower adds another historical landmark: the 37-metre-high tower was once part of Schönebeck’s medieval Salt Gate and now houses a gallery with changing exhibitions. A balustrade 30 metres above the ground offers views across the rooftops in all four directions. The 16-metre-high Salt Flower, a landmark made of iron and stainless steel, also stands on the Elbe riverbank.

In Bad Salzelmen, the Kunsthof brings several places and themes together: the ensemble includes the graduation tower, brine tower, demonstration saltworks and a small exhibition space in the Red House. Regular guided tours cover the town’s history of salt, brine and spa treatments; the Kunsthof also offers interactive salt-boiling demonstrations. The Salzland Museum complements a visit focused on salt history. If you plan to join a guided tour, check the current schedule before your trip.

Spa park, Solequell and animal park

As well as its historic sites, Bad Salzelmen offers a range of ways to spend time outdoors or in an indoor facility. The spa park has extensive grounds for walks in salt-rich air and includes historic buildings. Solequell Bad Salzelmen combines a modern swimming pool with a sauna and wellness area; natural brine is part of its relaxation and rejuvenation offer. As operating conditions may change, check the latest information if you plan a visit.

Bierer Berg Animal Park has animal enclosures, a children’s adventure playground, a café and an open-air stage. These are different offerings at one location; which ones matter for your visit depends on your own plans. The facilities may change over time, so it is worth checking the latest information before planning your visit.

Boat trips and countryside east of the Elbe

Boat trips of various kinds depart from the Marco Polo landing stage next to Salt Flower Square. The options include panoramic, coffee and moonlight cruises, as well as day trips. As trips and timetables may vary, check what is available for your chosen date in advance.

East of the Elbe, floodplain and lake landscapes form part of the area around Schönebeck. They offer opportunities for cycling, camping, swimming, fishing and walking, as well as experiences in nature. This landscape provides a different side to your stay from the town’s salt history. Conditions for individual activities may change; check in advance if needed.

An archaeological perspective on the Salzlandkreis

The Ringheiligtum Pömmelte, a reconstruction of a ritual site more than 4,000 years old, is located in the Salzlandkreis. The 115-metre-wide site consists of rings of wooden palisades, pits and earthworks; it can be viewed from a nine-metre-high observation platform. The Ringheiligtum is freely accessible year-round, except during certain events. Free parking and accessible toilets are also available. Before visiting, check whether an event will affect access.
