Discover Calbe (Saale) through its distinctive cultural sites, cycling routes and the Saale. The stone Roland statue stands in front of the town hall; at the same time, the town’s story ranges from its onion-growing tradition, which continues to this day, to protected biotopes and paths by the water.

Cultural Sites and Calbe’s History

Calbe’s stone Roland statue stands in front of the town hall. The sandstone figure is 4.5 metres tall and was unveiled in 1976. Its material, height and year make the statue a tangible point of reference in the town’s cultural history.

The Calbe local history museum is housed in former guest rooms above the Brauner Hirsch inn. It contains exhibitions and information panels on the history of Calbe. The site thus brings together two periods: the rooms’ former use and the stories of the town.

The Bismarck Tower is 30 metres tall and the tallest tower of its kind in Saxony-Anhalt. Onion growing is also part of Calbe’s history: it began in 1591 and continues to this day. Alongside its buildings, the town’s story also includes an agricultural tradition with a known starting date that remains alive today.

The Saale, Green Spaces and Outdoor Activities

Calbe is surrounded by protected biotopes, meadows and wooded areas. The reed-fringed Gribehner ponds and pools are part of this landscape. The GrĂĽne Lunge has paths for jogging, cycling, running and walking. This gives visitors a choice between cultural sites and paths through green spaces as different ways to spend their time.

The Wartenberg recreation area lies around four kilometres west of Calbe. It includes a small zoo with a petting enclosure and a playground. As a separate nearby destination, Wartenberg adds these specific facilities to the range of options.

Two seasonal offerings serve different purposes: the cable ferry in Calbe crosses the Saale to Gottesgnaden; the passenger boat Saalefee runs between Calbe and Bernburg during mild seasons. The cable ferry is one of the few of its kind in Germany and is powered solely by the Saale’s current. Check the operating conditions for both offerings before your trip.

There is also a public boat slipway on the Saale, accessible to boaters. Check the local access conditions before launching, as they may change.

Cycling Tours and Regional Routes

Calbe offers five different cycling tours, with options for experienced cyclists and families. On the Saale Cycle Route through Calbe, a renovated route on the western side of town contrasts with a quieter, more natural eastern side. The two sides offer different route experiences to help you plan your tours.

In the wider Salzlandkreis travel region, you can also explore the Bördehamster Cycle Route from Calbe or Barby. The Romanesque Road has six stops in five towns in the Salzlandkreis.
