Castle history, river cruises and routes through the Saale landscape reveal different sides of Bernburg (Saale). When planning your stay, it helps to consider what you want to focus on: culture around the castle and museum, a trip on the water, or an outing on foot or by bike. The zoo and fairytale attractions add their own distinctive touches, too.
The castle, church and Bernburg’s history
At Bernburg Castle, the keep stands out for its size: it is 42 metres high, with walls 3.60 metres thick. Considered the castle’s most striking building, it is also a local landmark. From the castle terrace, the view extends across the Saale Valley, the remaining floodplain forests and the foothills of the Harz Mountains; on very clear days, the Brocken can also be seen. The castle grounds, courtyard and gardens are open year-round free of charge. As access rules may change, check them before your trip.
Smaller historic traces also add to a visit to the castle: remnants of the castle chapel of St. Pancras have survived; it was probably built in the 12th or 13th century. St. Aegidien Castle Church was first documented in 1375 as the parish church of Bernburg’s hilltop town. Later, it served the Princes of Anhalt-Bernburg as both a castle church and a burial place.
The Museum Schloss Bernburg spans 243 million years. Its themes include dinosaur tracks, archaeological finds, the history of the residence, industrial heritage and Till Eulenspiegel. Vessels from the Bernburg culture are also on display. In 1892, based on the finds, Alfred Götze coined the term “Bernburg type” for a Neolithic culture that settled along the Saale.
Views of the Saale and tours
The KeĂźlerturm was built in 1913 and is 26 metres high. From there, the view extends across the Saale Valley and, on very clear days, can reach as far as the Brocken in the Harz Mountains. The castle and tower therefore offer two different viewpoints over the valley and the wider landscape.
For cycling holidays, Bernburg is part of the approximately 460-kilometre Saaleradweg, which starts at the Saale’s source near Zell in Bavaria and ends at Barby in Saxony-Anhalt. In the surrounding area, the route runs from Alsleben via Gröna and a pedestrian bridge to Bernburg, then continues towards Wedlitz. Many cycling routes start and end at the office of the Lower Saale Valley Nature Park at Bernburg railway station. The park’s landscape and cultural area extends between Plötzkau, Bernburg and Nienburg.
There are also options for walks: many hiking routes start and end at the same nature park office. The Bernburger Saaletalweg passes significant architectural monuments in the town. If you are planning a cycling tour, you can distinguish the longer Saaleradweg route from local routes; for a hike, the Saaletalweg is a separate option, with a focus on architectural monuments.
River cruises, the zoo and stage performances
The MS Saalefee offers river trips through the Saale Valley. Options include coffee, lock, sightseeing, dining and moonlight cruises. Along the way, you can enjoy views of the floodplain forests’ flora and fauna; refreshments are available on board. Check the specific offerings and timetable when choosing a cruise.
The 8.5-hectare Bernburg Zoo is divided into the areas of Africa, Eurasia, Australia and the Americas. Its particular focus is on breeding endangered species and species that are rarely seen. In total, it is home to more than 900 animals from around 125 wild species and domestic breeds. The “Paradies” fairytale garden features eleven tales by the Brothers Grimm across more than 2,000 square metres. Pneumatically controlled figures move and speak; the grounds also include a beer garden and dining options.
The Carl Maria von Weber Theatre presents a broad programme of opera, operetta, musicals, concerts, theatre education, tragedy and comedy. As the programme may change, check the schedule for your visit. The options are clearly distinct: river cruises and nature focus on the Saale, while the museum, castle and theatre explore cultural themes.
