An approximately five-kilometre walk takes in eight sights in Leuna. Its themes include historic traces, modern architecture and the Garden City’s green character. Leuna’s long history can also be explored at specific locations—from finds dating to the Neolithic period to buildings from the 20th century.

Experience Leuna on foot and by bike

The Saale Cycle Route offers a different perspective on Leuna. Its section through the town is paved and is considered idyllic and well suited to cycling. The route passes directly by the Leuna boat landing and the park with sculptures. A railway bridge on the Saale Cycle Route connects the town centre with the settlements in the Saale floodplain; it can be used by pedestrians and cyclists.

A pedestrian bridge leads from the Saale Cycle Route to the Waldbad. It is considered a summer spot for swimming and relaxing. Check access and seasonal opening before your visit so your plans suit the time of year.

Greenery and art in the park with sculptures

The park with sculptures features a large landscaped green space with shady meadows and named trees, including the Zöschen maple. Alongside this parkland, the site also offers a permanent collection of sculptures and reliefs from the Moritzburg Art Museum in Halle (Saale). It is presented as a multimedia experience; the presentation technology used may change.

Garden City, architecture and early history

Leuna’s Garden City is designated a protected historic area and was established after the Badische Anilin- und Sodafabrik (BASF) was founded in 1916. Christ the King Church stands on the eastern edge of the Garden City and was designed in the New Objectivity style. Another exhibition on the Garden City is housed in the ruins of St Nicholas’ Church in Rössen. The permanent exhibition is open year-round and free of charge; check local arrangements before your visit.

Leuna is also the namesake of the Rössen culture, a Neolithic cultural period dating approximately from 4500 to 3500 BC. The term “Rössen culture” was introduced in 1900 after finds were made on the site of today’s Sculpture Park in Leuna. The dates refer to different things: the dating describes the cultural period, while 1900 is the year the term was introduced.

The Waldbad as a bathing complex from the Weimar Republic

The Waldbad also combines a summer destination with architectural history. Its building was constructed in 1930–1931 and is considered a well-preserved example of a bathing establishment from the Weimar Republic. The building is also considered an example of Bauhaus style and is constructed of steel, concrete and glass. If you would like to combine a visit to the Waldbad with a bike ride, you can plan to use the pedestrian bridge from the Saale Cycle Route to get there; check seasonal opening and access in advance.

Getting there and choosing where to stay

Leuna has road connections to the A9, A38 and B91. A tram connects the town with Halle (Saale); Leipzig can be reached by car or train. Check timetables and journey times before setting off, as these are essential to planning your specific trip.

If you are looking for a hotel in Leuna, you can choose what to focus on during your stay based on your interests: the walk takes you to sights and urban architecture, while the Saale Cycle Route offers a view of the town from the saddle. The park, Garden City, church and Waldbad add a range of other themes. You can plan your visit around whether you would most like to discover Leuna on foot, by bike, or through its architectural and cultural history.
