Wickerode is a starting point for hikes in the South Harz Karst Landscape Biosphere Reserve. It also has a well-signposted local trail network, a recreation area in the Nasse valley and the Baroque-style St. Trinitatis Church. These different focal points can help you shape your stay around the outdoors, physical activity and local history: you can make hiking the main focus or set aside time for the village’s facilities and a visit to the church.

Hiking in the karst landscape

Wickerode can serve as a starting point for hikes in the South Harz Karst Landscape Biosphere Reserve. The well-signposted local trail network adds routes in the immediate area. This gives you two scales to consider when planning: excursions into the reserve and hikes closer to the village. Markers and trail conditions can change, so check the signs and trail conditions locally before setting out. This will help you plan your specific route based on the latest information.

Recreation in the Nasse valley

Wickerode’s recreation area lies in the Nasse valley. It offers opportunities for sports, play, relaxation and barbecuing; the grounds also include a playground and a charcoal burner’s hut. This brings a range of activities together in one place, providing a different focus from hiking along a trail. You can therefore plan your day around a route or the facilities at the recreation area. If you plan to visit, check locally whether the grounds are available and what opening rules apply.

St. Trinitatis: history and church garden

St. Trinitatis Church dates from 1745 and was restored between 1992 and 1994. The present building incorporates masonry from an earlier church and largely retains the character of the Baroque building from 1745. Older building fabric and Baroque influences therefore meet in the same structure, while the restoration marks a further stage in its history. Visits are possible by prior arrangement; please coordinate your visit before you arrive. The open church garden also offers a quiet place to take a break.

Rural surroundings and the Karst Hiking Trail

Agriculture and fruit growing shape the surroundings of Wickerode. The rural setting is therefore as much a part of the village’s character as its individual places to visit. The Karst Hiking Trail provides a broader thematic context: it stretches for 265 kilometres through Mansfeld-Südharz, Nordhausen and the former district of Osterode. It is marked with a white K on a red bar against a white background. Its information covers geology, landscape, nature conservation, groundwater, and settlement and industrial history. The local trail network and the Karst Hiking Trail represent different scales: one provides orientation on local paths, while the other runs for 265 kilometres through several areas and adds geological, ecological and historical themes to hiking. If you plan to use the Karst Hiking Trail, check its markings and trail conditions before setting out.
