Nearby Harkerode has several historic landmarks: a village church built in 1832 to designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel stands there. Other heritage sites of interest to visitors include Arnstein Castle Ruins and the Knigge Mausoleum.

Arnstein Castle Ruins and Harkerode

The castle ruins provide access to a partially restored main building, a tower staircase and the castle cellars. Wall and building fragments have also been preserved; the site offers views across the Eine Valley. You can reach the ruins on foot from Harkerode or from a roadside parking area between Sylda and Harkerode. Check local opening arrangements before your visit.

For cyclists, the castle ruins are the endpoint of a marked route between Aschersleben and the site. Check the current signage before setting out. The village church in Harkerode adds a distinctive architectural touch: it was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and built in 1832. This means that a medieval-style ruin and a 19th-century building stand side by side nearby as distinct historic landmarks.

Nordmann Wildlife Park in Stangerode

In Stangerode, Nordmann Wildlife Park offers an extensive natural area with around 1,300 animals. These include steppe cattle, deer, ostriches, bison and other species. Visitors can use circular trails and walking paths; the grounds can also be explored by off-road vehicle. This makes it quite different from the historic buildings in Harkerode: here, the focus is on animals, the landscape and different ways to explore the grounds. As animal numbers and visitor arrangements may change, check the latest visitor information.

More cultural and nature highlights in the wider Mansfeld-Südharz destination

The wider Mansfeld-Südharz destination offers everything from Luther sites to Romanesque architecture. The Luther sites in Eisleben include the houses where Martin Luther was born and died. St. Mary’s Church in Klostermansfeld is part of the Romanesque Road cultural route. It was probably built around 1140 as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica for a Benedictine monastery; 1170 is considered its official founding year.

Another connection to Luther is the Luther Fountain in Mansfeld: Paul Juckhoff created the Luther monument in 1913 in the Art Nouveau style. The pedestal on Lutherplatz also serves as a fountain. The bronze reliefs depict Luther’s parents and Martin Luther as a 13-year-old boy. The different architectural and memorial forms offer distinct points of interest: St. Mary’s represents Romanesque monastery architecture, while the fountain is a Luther monument from the early 20th century.

The landscape and hiking trails are also among the region’s highlights. The area around Questenberg is part of the South Harz Karst Biosphere Reserve and was designated a nature reserve as early as 1927. A hike near Questenberg starts at the festival grounds in the centre of the village. In Mansfeld-Südharz, the long-distance Luther Trail network passes important Reformation sites along a route of more than 81 kilometres.

The Questen Festival is celebrated in Questenberg every year at Pentecost according to ancient tradition and is considered a continuation of a Germanic solstice cult that is believed to be thousands of years old. At the Luther Fountain in Mansfeld, a historic reenactment of Martin Luther’s school enrolment takes place every year on the weekend after Easter, with a stage programme, market stalls and musical entertainment. Historic narrow-gauge trains run several times a year on special occasions along a route between Klostermansfeld and Hettstedt. These events take place at different times of year: Pentecost for the Questen Festival, the weekend after Easter for the school enrolment reenactment, and several dates throughout the year for the special train rides. Check current programmes and train schedules before travelling.

The Mansfeld-Südharz tourism region’s network of tourist information centres includes eight locations. Its services include city tours and guided excursions, the sale of event and museum tickets, and accommodation bookings. It is best to check in advance which services are currently available.
