Benzingerode lies between Austberg and Struven, also known as Ziegenberg, where the Hellbach cuts through the Muschelkalk ridge. Together with Horstberg, these ridges form part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The area can be explored from two different perspectives: outdoors along the Muschelkalk and through its vegetation, or by visiting historical sites in Benzingerode and the surrounding area. The destinations differ significantly: a marked circular route, a weather-dependent observation tower and a menhir each offer a distinct focus, without requiring a set order.

Landscape and Outdoor Activities

Nearby, a marked 7 km circular route leads over Austberg, which consists mainly of Muschelkalk, and through vegetation. The Austberg Tower can be climbed when the weather permits and is checkpoint no. 83 on the Harzer Wandernadel hiking trail stamp network. This gives you two distinct features to factor into your day’s plans: a route of a set length and a tower climb that depends on the weather. The stamp checkpoint offers a separate point of interest if you choose your hikes based on the Harzer Wandernadel stations.

Historical Traces and Accessibility

The large menhir in Benzingerode still stands in its original location. It is 3.50 m tall, and its age is estimated at 4,000 to 5,000 years. A few remains of Struvenburg, a former medieval castle complex, lie just east of Benzingerode. The comparison is between a menhir of estimated age and the remains of a castle: both are distinct historical traces in the village and its immediate surroundings.

Benzingerode Church is also relevant when planning your visit. Its interior is partially accessible by wheelchair, although some door thresholds and small steps have to be negotiated. Accessibility is therefore not complete. If you have specific accessibility requirements, check in advance whether the access conditions are suitable for your visit.

More Things to Explore in Wernigerode

Wernigerode, as a broader travel destination, offers its own options for planning. The “Kleiner Harz” miniature park is located in Wernigerode’s Bürgerpark and features around 60 culturally and historically interesting buildings from the Harz region in a miniature landscape. The Bürgerpark also includes themed gardens, playgrounds, animal enclosures, a park restaurant and ponds. The Museum Kleinstes Haus in Wernigerode offers a glimpse into the former living conditions in this house. At the Harz Planetarium, explanations and experiments cover topics including the sun’s path, the phases of the moon and how clouds form. The Wernigerode Castle Railway travels to Wernigerode Castle; along the way, drivers provide information about sights on the route. Wernigerode therefore offers a choice of miniature buildings, domestic history, nature topics, park attractions and a narrated ride to the castle.
