Elbingerode’s character ranges from church architecture and local history to views across the Brocken massif. Its local attractions are easy to distinguish from other destinations in the wider Oberharz am Brocken travel region—useful when you are looking for accommodation and weighing up different priorities for your stay.

Churches, Architectural History and the Townscape

The Protestant St. Jacobi Church in Elbingerode was built in the neo-Gothic style by Hase, a royal Hanoverian master builder. The Deaconess Motherhouse displays a different architectural influence: it is a Bauhaus-style building, constructed between 1932 and 1934 to designs by Godehard Schwethelm. Together, the two buildings represent different facets of the town’s architectural history.

The Heimatstube Elbingerode (Harz) explores everyday and local history. Its exhibits include furniture, household items and documents, as well as objects related to crafts and woodworking. The castle ruins date back to the 16th century; the surviving castle walls stand in a park designed for recreation. The architecture, crafts and traces of the ruins offer different ways to explore Elbingerode’s history.

Views and a Described Hike

The viewing pavilion on the Kahlenberg offers panoramic views across Elbingerode to the Brocken massif. A specific hiking route passes several other stops: the ninth tour in the Harzer Wandernadel’s “Mein erstes Stempelheft” booklet passes the Büchenberg Show Mine, the marble quarry, the Dreiherrenstein and the Galgenberg before returning. The viewpoint and the route offer different highlights: views over the town and the Brocken massif on the one hand, and a series of named stops on the other.
