Timmenrode offers two very different hiking experiences: an easy circular trail through meadows and the Hasental Valley, and the rocky ridge trail along the Devil’s Wall. When choosing a destination for a hiking trip, you can focus on the distinctive landscapes of these trails.

Circular trail through the Hasental Valley or ridge trail along the Devil’s Wall

The easy circular hiking trail links Cattenstedt, Wienrode and Timmenrode. It follows comfortable paths through scenic meadows and along gnarled old fruit trees through the Hasental Valley. This makes it a different hiking option from the rocky ridge trail: the route description here highlights meadows, fruit trees and comfortable paths.

The Devil’s Wall stretches between Großvater Rock in Blankenburg (Harz) and the Hamburger Wappen rock formation near Timmenrode. Its winding ridge trail passes over cliffs and through narrow rock crevices. The two descriptions therefore clearly differ in terrain. The Hamburger Wappen is also checkpoint 74 in the Harzer Wandernadel hiking badge system.

A tourism flyer from 2021 lists signposted hiking trails leading from Timmenrode in almost every direction. Check current trail conditions in advance when planning a specific hike.

A look back at Timmenrode’s history

During the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), Timmenrode and its surroundings were heavily devastated. The church and parsonage in Timmenrode are reported to have been built in 1696. These two historical details provide a timeline that adds a glimpse of the town’s history to your hiking plans.

Culture and landscapes in Blankenburg (Harz)

The Herbergsmuseum Blankenburg is Germany’s only historically preserved journeymen’s hostel that has been developed as a museum. It features a themed exhibition on the travels of journeymen craftsmen. Opening times vary by season. At Regenstein Castle and Fortress, the open-air museum gives visitors access to various historical rooms and displays artefacts relating to the history of the Counts of Regenstein. If you’re interested in gardens, the terraced garden in Blankenburg Palace Gardens was laid out in 1718.

The wider destination of Blankenburg (Harz) also offers more ways to enjoy the landscape and relax. In the Heers, towering sandstone rocks—some with caves—lie in a woodland clearing about the size of a football pitch. The “Am Thie” biological outdoor swimming pool is in the centre of Blankenburg (Harz), next to Thiepark, and offers chlorine-free swimming. Outdoor pool visits are seasonal; check current opening arrangements in advance.
