A distinctive way to explore Halle is to move between the city skyline and the riverside landscape. The Saale flows through Halle; paths along its banks pass promenades, parks and cafés. At the same time, the city preserves an almost completely intact historic old town. This combination of urban history and riverside paths offers different ways to explore the city, without any one theme defining it on its own.

Towers, castle and Handel

On the Market Square, the Market Church, the Red Tower and the Handel Monument shape Halle’s characteristic skyline of five towers. Another striking landmark is Giebichenstein Castle, considered the oldest castle on the Saale. Held annually on the banks of the Saale below the castle, the Hanseatic Festival brings the history of the Hanseatic League to life with historical reenactments, performances and other events on and along the Saale. A permanent cityscape and a recurring historical event thus come together.

Handel’s connection to the city can also be experienced in two cultural settings: the Handel House is his birthplace; at the annual Handel Festival, Georg Friedrich Handel is celebrated with music in churches, squares and concert halls. The Lantern Festival takes place on the banks of the Saale on the last weekend in August, combining culture, fairground attractions and food. If you want a festival to determine when you travel, check the exact festival dates before planning.

Museums and collections

The Francke Foundations combine a cultural and scientific complex of European significance with a unique art and natural history collection. The State Museum of Prehistory focuses on archaeological treasures, including the world-famous Nebra Sky Disc. It was inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register in June 2013. The Moritzburg Art Museum offers a different emphasis: its collection includes paintings, graphic art, sculpture, applied arts and design, photography, coins and medals, as well as outstanding works of classical modernism.

Unusual buildings also shape the city’s cultural landscape. The Halle (Saale) Planetarium is the largest and most modern planetarium in Saxony-Anhalt and is housed in a former gasometer on the green Saline Island. The Saltworks Museum is a listed complex and is considered one of Germany’s most important saltworks monuments. Halle’s cultural range is thus reflected in its collections, science and listed saltworks complex.

The Sky Disc in a wider context

Looking at the broader destination of Saxony-Anhalt lets you explore the Sky Disc’s connections beyond Halle: the Arche Nebra Visitor Centre is located at the site where the disc was found. The Sky Disc Cycle Route links Halle (Saale) and Arche Nebra over a distance of 71 kilometres. This offers a regional comparison between the archaeological treasure at the State Museum and the place where the disc was discovered.

Paths along the Saale and getting here

The Saale shapes not only the view of the city but also the ways to explore it on foot and by bike. Peißnitz Island has a circular route of up to 4,800 metres; the path surface may vary depending on the weather and flooding. The island is easy to reach by bike or on foot and is intended to remain car-free, with certain exceptions. The Saale Cycle Route offers a different perspective: it runs through Halle and is flat and family-friendly. Depending on your interests, you can choose a circular route on the island or a cycle route that passes through Halle.

Halle has Intercity and ICE train connections; check the relevant timetable before travelling. When looking for a hotel in Halle, you can first decide what you want to focus on: collections and festival culture or paths along the Saale lead to different ideas for your visit.
