Since 2000, Mildensee has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz. The village can also be explored through a range of themes: historic settlement patterns, the Tower of the Eight Winds, cycling routes and leisure activities. This lets you tailor your stay to culture, cycling and leisure in different ways.

Local history and the Garden Kingdom

The historic settlement patterns of Dellnau, Pötnitz and Scholitz are still clearly discernible today. UNESCO World Heritage status provides the broader context; the three settlement centres make the history tangible at the level of the village’s layout. To understand Mildensee’s cultural significance, consider these different scales together rather than focusing on a single building.

The tower, church and Lake Scholitz

The Tower of the Eight Winds was built from 1809 to 1812. The area around Pötnitz Church conveys a highly authentic impression of the Garden Kingdom era. These two places offer different points of interest: the tower is a clearly dated building, while the church area reflects the character of the Garden Kingdom era. Both offer tangible points of interest for visitors drawn to architectural history and cultural landscapes.

At Lake Scholitz, the Tower of the Eight Winds and the adjacent village green were made more suitable for tourism and for projects and events organised by the village community as part of a completed landscape improvement project. Here, the focus extends beyond the tower to the green and its importance for tourism and community initiatives.

Cycling tours with different focuses

The 68-kilometre Garden Kingdom Tour around Dessau connects the palaces and parks of the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz. It is named after Prince Leopold III Frederick Francis of Anhalt-Dessau (1740–1817). Another cycling tour runs from Dessau city centre through Mildensee to the Oranienbaumer Heide. The tours differ in their stated focus: the Garden Kingdom Tour combines a specific distance with destinations in the Garden Kingdom; the other highlights the sequence from the city centre through Mildensee to the heath, as well as the direction of travel into the heath. When planning, you can first decide whether the cultural destinations or the route described is more important to you. The 68-kilometre distance gives you a concrete guide for estimating the time needed for the Garden Kingdom Tour.

Leisure and landscape

The sports and leisure centre in Mildensee has a modern beach volleyball court. Non-members can also rent it for €15.00 per hour. The hourly rate gives you a specific basis for setting aside time in your leisure plans. As booking conditions may change, check them in advance. The Adria lido in the Mildensee district is a privately operated outdoor swimming pool; operator details may change.

The Mildensee cadastral area is also part of the “Untere Mulde” nature reserve. This protected-area designation adds a distinct landscape perspective to the area’s historical and cultural connections.
