Vineyard terraces, paths through the Blütengrund and traces of Max Klinger give Großjena its distinctive character. You can shape your stay around the landscape, culture or a combination of both.

Wine Country and Nature

The Blütengrund near Großjena is characterised by vineyards with protected terraces and numerous dry-stone walls. Slopes with favourable microclimates and orchards add to the landscape. The Blütengrund lies within the Saale-Unstrut-Triasland Nature Park.

A network of hiking and cycling trails offers various ways to explore the surrounding area. Farm tracks through meadows, fields and small woods invite you to discover nature and its rare flora and fauna. The park with its mature trees at the Großjena manor house is ideal for a stroll.

Klinger’s Story and Other Cultural Highlights

In 1903, Max Klinger acquired a vineyard in Großjena with two vineyard cottages. The Max Klinger House features a permanent exhibition about the artist’s life and work. It also contains two large tiled stoves designed and moulded by Klinger himself.

Max Klinger’s grave in Großjena is adorned with a bronze sculpture that he modelled himself. A flight of steps, flanked by two marble herm figures, leads up to it. The Stone Album is also nearby: twelve larger-than-life reliefs carved into a sandstone terrace wall in the middle of a vineyard.

St. Ruperti Church is another historical landmark: it is mentioned as early as the 15th century, and its altar with pulpit dates from 1723. The owner organises exhibitions at the manor house. The town’s history thus spans a range of themes—from Klinger’s life and work to older buildings.

Routes and Exploring the Blütengrund

The Saale Wine Experience Trail is a 25-kilometre circular route that passes through Großjena. It is fully accessible by bicycle; by contrast, the vineyard trail along the vineyard heights is reserved exclusively for hikers. The Saale-Unstrut Wine Route also passes directly through Großjena.

You can also explore the Blütengrund on horseback or by horse-drawn wagon or carriage. If you plan such a trip, check availability in advance. There are several ways to explore the area, while the restriction on the vineyard trail is important to bear in mind when planning your specific route.

Festival and Seasonal Planning

Großjena celebrates the Wine Blossom Festival, which includes the crowning of the Wine Blossom Princess. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates before planning.

At the confluence of the Saale and Unstrut, visitors can take a ferry to the opposite bank of the Saale. The ferry operates seasonally; check the operating details before travelling. Outside ferry operating hours, the Blütengrund can be reached via the Großjena–Roßbach cycling route. As route conditions can change, it is also advisable to check the current trail situation before using this connection.
