The year in Schwaneberg runs from the traditional bonfire at the beginning of the year to spring and summer blooms. In between come the Easter tradition and harvest festival; in December, an Advent market is also held. Alongside these seasonal events, the church, sculpture and technology museum showcase architectural history, art and technology.

Church, art and technology

St. Lamberti Church has a square western tower dating from the 12th century; the nave was completely rebuilt in 1740. This means that the building brings together structural elements from very different periods. In the town centre, there is also the bronze sculpture “Mother with Child” by sculptor Heinrich Apel. Apel was born in Schwaneberg, giving the sculpture and artist a direct connection to the town.

The former Catholic church is preserved as a cultural church and is used for concerts, among other events. If you are planning to attend a concert, confirm access in advance. The technology museum displays agricultural equipment and tools, including a spade and a threshing machine. The cultural highlights thus range from architectural history and sculpture to agricultural technology. The exhibits clearly illustrate the difference between manual work and mechanisation in agriculture: the spade is a hand tool, while the threshing machine is used to process grain.

Traditions throughout the year

At the beginning of each year, the Schwaneberg e.V. Traditional Fire Brigade holds a traditional bonfire at the fire bowl. On Easter Sunday, Easter eggs are rolled down the hill at “Schwaneberg” as part of the Easter egg rolling tradition. The tradition is passed down from one generation to the next. The two customs fall at different points in the calendar: the bonfire takes place at the start of the year, while egg rolling is tied to Easter.

The Schwaneberg e.V. Culture and Local History Association holds the harvest festival every year on the first Sunday in September. In December, the association hosts an Advent market in the large hall of the community courtyard in Schwaneberg. If you are travelling for a festival, check the exact event date in advance.

Blooms and seasonal windows

Every spring, large numbers of visitors gather at the colourful tulip fields belonging to the Degenhardt family in Schwaneberg. Blooming gladioli can be admired in Schwaneberg at the end of July; the exact flowering dates vary. These are two distinct flower-viewing windows to plan around: tulips in spring and gladioli towards the end of July. The exact timing of the gladioli varies, so it is worth checking shortly beforehand.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Schwaneberg, a simple approach can help: first decide whether a festival date or flowering season will determine your travel dates. If no seasonal occasion is a deciding factor, you can instead make architectural history, sculpture or the agricultural equipment in the technology museum the focus of your visit.
