The Loitsche salt heaps, locally known as “Kalimandscharo”, give Loitsche-Heinrichsberg a distinctive focal point for a stay. Guided tours of the heaps are offered from March to October. Since this is a seasonal activity, check whether the tour is currently running before your visit. This lets you plan a specific activity without assuming it is available regardless of the season.

Plan your Kalimandscharo tour

The guided tours start at the information point on the road between Loitsche and Ramstedt. Participants must be at least ten years old. If you are travelling with younger companions, take this age limit into account when planning: they are not permitted to join the tour. For everyone else, the fixed starting point makes it easy to plan the activity as a guided tour; confirm in advance that it is currently going ahead.

The March-to-October period provides a seasonal window for a visit, but does not remove the need to check whether a specific tour is running. Plan your visit to the heaps around the actual tour date. The age limit and starting point are just as useful as the season: they tell you who can take part and where the tour begins, while confirmation that the tour is going ahead answers the final practical question before setting out.

Getting to and finding your way around Loitsche

For the Loitsche district, the L 44 is an important road link between Wolmirstedt and Rogätz. Bus services also run to Wolmirstedt, Angern, Schricke, Wenddorf and Farsleben. The right connection for your travel plans depends on where you want to go. Check road and bus information before travelling, as both can change.

If you choose a holiday apartment as a base for your stay, first consider which of the listed connections best suits your plans. The bus destinations provide an indication of the places connected to Loitsche; they do not give journey times or service frequency. So if you plan to travel by bus, check the specific timetable for your travel date. For a road journey, the L 44 link between Wolmirstedt and Rogätz is the relevant reference point.

The Elbe Cycle Route and the Börde as a regional backdrop

The Elbe Cycle Route is also part of the regional picture: near Rogätz, it crosses the Elbe by ferry and connects the Börde district with Jerichower Land. The route offers a separate focus alongside the guided tour of the salt heaps. If you plan to include the Elbe Cycle Route in your trip, check both the ferry service and the route in advance.

In the wider travel destination of the Börde, the perspective shifts from an individual heap to landscapes of great variety. The district stretches from the fertile Börde in the south, Germany’s largest contiguous area of black earth, to the meadows and wetlands of the Drömling in the north. Wooded ridges and the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide shape the centre of the district; the heath is home to Europe’s largest continuous lime forest. These regional landscapes describe the Börde as a whole, not just Loitsche-Heinrichsberg.

Culture and technology in the wider Börde destination

The Börde offers more for those interested in cultural history: churches, monasteries, palaces, castles, museums and historic architectural monuments are among the visitor attractions there. The “Romanesque Route” includes ten different sites in the Börde district. Numerous palaces, castles and manor houses also document the former wealth of the landed gentry. This adds a distinct selection of architectural and cultural history to the area’s natural attractions and cycle routes.

Hundisburg Castle is one of Saxony-Anhalt’s most significant rural Baroque palaces and is surrounded by historic gardens and parkland. The Baroque garden showcases symmetry and sophisticated garden design. Also in Hundisburg, the Ziegelei technical monument combines a brickworks with a technology museum. It includes hand-moulded brick production, a coarse-ceramics workshop for shaping and pottery, a building-materials workshop and a carpentry shop. The historic narrow-gauge railway offers visitors a ride of about two kilometres past old kilns, a bucket-chain excavator and the former clay pit. The wider Börde region thus offers garden design and technological history as distinct interests.
