A 1.6-kilometre-long city wall encloses Haldensleben’s historic town centre. Together with the largely unchanged medieval street plan, alleys, squares, half-timbered houses and city towers, it provides a distinctive cultural and historical theme for your stay. You can explore it through specific buildings, the townscape and the museum’s collections.

City Wall, Gate Tower and Roland

The historic centre is enclosed by a 1.6-kilometre-long city wall. The town’s layout is also remarkable: its medieval street plan, alleys and squares, half-timbered houses and city towers have remained largely unchanged. This draws attention not only to individual buildings, but also to the historic arrangement of streets and squares.

The Bülstringer Gate Tower was built around 1250 to 1260. Another distinctive feature is the Equestrian Roland: among the 24 surviving Roland statues, it is the only one depicted on horseback. These two examples offer different points of interest—the gate tower highlights the medieval town fortifications, while the Roland represents a distinctive form of Roland statue.

Museum and Architectural History

Since 1910, the Haldensleben Museum has been housed in a Neoclassical stucco building constructed in 1865–1866. A visit to the museum thus brings together the history of the building and the contents of its collections. One section of the museum is devoted to part of the estate of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.

Gardens, Technology and Interactive Learning

Hundisburg Castle and its Baroque garden are a stop on Garden Dreams – Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt. The garden displays pronounced symmetry and detailed horticultural artistry. The landscaped park connects Hundisburg with Althaldensleben and offers the opportunity for extended walks.

The Hundisburg Brickworks Technical Monument combines a brickworks and a technology museum. Brick production includes the hand-striking method. The offerings also include guided tours of the technology museum, courses and regular events. If you are planning to attend a particular tour or event, check the dates in advance.

At the House of the Forest, visitors learn about forests in an interactive way: play, exploration and hands-on activities are all part of the experience. This complements the themes of architecture and technology with a practical exploration of the forest, without prescribing a single learning path.

Cycling Routes and Water Sports

When choosing a route, you can compare two different distances. The Aller-Elbe Cycle Route is approximately 80 kilometres long, connects the Aller and Elbe cycle routes, and passes through Haldensleben’s historic old town. The Ohre-Beber Cycle Route forms an approximately 12-kilometre route around Haldensleben. This offers a choice between a longer connection linking two cycle routes and a shorter route around the town.

Haldensleben’s location on the Mittelland Canal is also associated with water sports, including at the marina and the Haldensleben Rolli-Bad. Check visitor access and operating details for these facilities before your trip.

The Börde Landscape

Across the wider Börde travel region, the landscape ranges from the fertile Börde in the south, home to Germany’s largest contiguous area of chernozem, to the meadows and marshes of the Drömling in the north. In the centre of the district, wooded ridges and the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide, with Europe’s largest contiguous lime forest, shape the landscape. This range of settings complements the cultural and urban themes with a regional perspective on diverse landscapes.
