Kunrau combines the history of its castle and historic park with a direct connection to the Drömling. This offers culture and landscape as distinct highlights of your stay: a guided tour explores the castle, the park invites you to linger, and the nature trail and routes lead into or through the moorland. These options are complemented by activities at the Kreativhof Kunrau.
Castle, Park and History
Kunrau Castle was built between 1859 and 1861 for Theodor Hermann Rimpau. The historic castle park, with its magnificent design, offers a different highlight and invites you to linger. A visit can therefore combine architectural history with time in the park. Castle tours include climbing the tower and visiting the exhibition in the attic. If these activities match your interests, ask about guided tours when planning your visit.
Rimpau is also connected to another aspect of local history: in 1862, as owner of the Kunrau estate, he began building peat dams. The topics follow one another chronologically: after the castle was built for Rimpau, he began constructing the peat dams in 1862, so the castle’s history and the development of the moor can be read as successive chapters in Kunrau’s history.
Explore the Drömling
Kunrau is directly connected to the Drömling, a large wetland and lowland moor area. Its landscape includes meadows, hedgerows, forests, marshes and bodies of water, as well as an extensive network of waterways. A nature trail leads from Kunrau into the northern Drömling and provides a way to explore it. The office of the Drömling Nature and Cultural Landscape of Saxony-Anhalt is also located in Kunrau.
Other routes connect to the area in different ways: The Klötze Moor and Forest Tour in the Drömling is about 60 km long and continues to Kunrau, to the castle or manor house. This distance refers to the entire tour, not just the section by the castle. By contrast, the Altmark Circular Route from Klötze to the Hanseatic town of Salzwedel passes Kunrau Castle. On the first tour, Kunrau is a destination; on the Altmark Circular Route, the castle lies along the way.
Kreativhof and Practical Information
The Kreativhof Kunrau mainly offers creative courses on nature-related themes. There are also tastings of the farm’s own beer and outdoor cooking in the “wild kitchen.” While the courses focus on nature, the tastings and cooking add a culinary touch. Please confirm the specific course, tasting and cooking dates with the Kreativhof before your visit.
Kunrau outdoor swimming pool has been closed since 2021; check its current status before planning a visit around it. The Nature Experience Centre and Öko-Schule Kunrau ceased operations on 31 July 2024.
