The Wall Promenade forms a green ring around Gardelegen’s old town, offering views of historic buildings and the town moat. Churches, remnants of former fortifications, and opportunities to explore on foot or by bicycle reveal different sides of the town and its surrounding area.

Ramparts and Former Fortifications

The circular rampart walk is 2.7 kilometres long and takes about 45 to 60 minutes. You can allow this amount of time when planning; check local access conditions before setting out. Gardelegen’s ramparts were restored in keeping with heritage conservation requirements between 2003 and 2007. They were also included in the state-wide Gartenträume network.

Remnants of the former fortifications include the ruin of Stendal Gate, Salzwedel Gate and sections of the wall. The ramparts are also home to a water-treading basin fed by the Laugebach stream. If you would like to use it, check the details on site. The Future History app lets you explore the town through historic photographs and texts about individual locations; check before your trip whether this digital service is available.

Churches and Guided Town Tours

Guided tours of St. Marien and St. Nikolai churches are available. Both St. Marien Church and the partly ruined St. Nikolai Church can be visited year-round. As visiting arrangements may vary, check the current arrangements in advance.

Guided town tours can be tailored to guests’ wishes and take in important buildings and squares. They can also accommodate visitors using a walking frame or wheelchair. Check current availability with the Tourist Information Office.

Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Memorial

The Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Gardelegen Memorial stands at the historic site of the Gardelegen massacre. It commemorates 1,016 concentration camp prisoners from many European countries who were murdered near Gardelegen on 13 April 1945. As an international place of remembrance, information and encounter, it is dedicated to this history.

The outdoor grounds are open to individual visitors and groups during the day; admission is free. Check current opening hours and admission arrangements before your visit. In the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, the memorial has a documentation and visitor centre with a permanent exhibition that opened in 2020.

BĂĽrgerpark offers play and sports facilities, including a skatepark, a volleyball area, a boules court and fitness equipment. Facilities may change. If a particular facility is important for your stay, check its current condition on site.

The Altmark Circuit in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel

The Altmark Circuit is almost 500 kilometres long and passes through forests and meadows, by numerous brick and fieldstone churches. In the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, much of the route runs close to the “Green Belt of Germany” and connects nature, history and culture. The circuit has ten stages with a variety of surfaces: asphalt, concrete track slabs, surfaced farm and forest tracks, sandy farm tracks and quiet roads. When choosing a stage, take its particular surface into account as a separate planning consideration.
