Diesdorf offers two perspectives on the Altmark: its open-air museum showcases rural life from the 17th to the 20th century, while the surrounding area is characterised by gentle hills, dark forests and sandy fields. This makes it possible to discover cultural history and nature through specific places and landscapes.

Rural life at the open-air museum

The open-air museum covers around six hectares and features more than 20 residential and agricultural buildings. Historically inspired gardens and fields complement the site. The buildings and grounds convey a sense of how rural life in the Altmark unfolded over several centuries.

The gardens also reflect different periods: the new vicarage garden combines plants historically documented in vicarage gardens with others considered potentially relevant to the future of Central Europe. The site also includes a historic apiary dating from 1930, brought here from JĂĽbar. The exhibition inside explains beekeeping in the past and present.

Monastery church and local history

The monastery church of St Mary and St Crucis is a stop on the Romanesque Road in Saxony-Anhalt. It is considered the oldest vaulted church in the Altmark and one of the region’s best-preserved late Romanesque buildings. It is open for quiet visits and tours in summer, and is also used for concerts and guided church tours.

Another glimpse into the monastery’s history can be found at the Alte Darre: the building once served as the monastery’s construction and bakehouse and now houses a local history museum and a multi-purpose hall. If you are planning a visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance. The old monastery wall is also a surviving testament to local history. The historic buildings in the town centre recall Diesdorf’s development into a regionally significant market town in the 19th century.

The church from Klein Chüden on the museum grounds offers a special historical connection. It also serves as a memorial to the division of Germany: its bell comes from the depopulated border village of Jahrsau. Alongside the history of rural everyday life, it also brings a later chapter of the region’s history into focus.

Woodland landscape and nature

Diesdorf’s terminal moraine landscape features gentle hills, dark forests and sandy fields. The Salzwedel-Diesdorf landscape conservation area protects extensive forests along the terminal moraine ridge between Diesdorf and Salzwedel, including habitats for wild plants and animals. To the north-east of the village lies Diesdorfer Wohld, with mixed woodland, forest meadows, numerous springs and groups of juniper.

Hiking in nature and cycling tours are among the options for active recreation. Diesdorf is a starting point for hikes and cycling tours in the surrounding forests. Those travelling by bicycle can reach the open-air museum directly via the signposted Altmark Circular Route. Check the current signposting and route before setting out. There is also an adventure pool among the options for active recreation; it is advisable to check the current opening hours before visiting.

Cycling in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel

The Altmark Circular Route offers a broader setting for cycling tours in the wider destination of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel: it is almost 500 kilometres long and passes through forests and meadows, with numerous brick and fieldstone churches along the way. For long stretches, it runs close to the Green Belt of Germany, connecting nature, history and culture. The ten stages have a variety of surfaces, including asphalt, concrete trackways, surfaced farm and forest tracks, sandy agricultural tracks and quiet roads. This regional information helps convey the variety of the route without limiting it to individual sections in Diesdorf.

The road route to Diesdorf follows the B 248 to Beetzendorf, then the L 11. Check the current route before setting off.
