Kuhnhöfen is set in a predominantly agricultural landscape. Meadows, wooded heights and the small Saynbach, which flows through the valley, shape the local scenery; the village is also within the catchment area of the Westerwald Lake District. Kuhnhöfen is shaped both by its rural landscape and by its distinctive church tradition.

Village history and St. Blaise

The tradition of St. Blaise lives on in an annual celebration at the village chapel. Local legend links the custom to the protection of livestock during an outbreak of cattle plague. The Catholic branch church of St. Blaise at Hauptstraße 26 was built in 1934 as a single-nave structure made of quarry stone. Since 2014, Kuhnhöfen has belonged to the parish of St. Anna Herschbach. Together, the custom, church building and parish affiliation offer different insights into the village’s religious history.

Nature and trails in the wider Westerwald destination

In the wider Westerwald destination, the Westerwald Lake District comprises seven ponds. A level circular trail runs around Dreifelder Weiher on gravel paths that are passable year-round. Weather and maintenance can affect trail conditions, so it is a good idea to check the current route before setting out. Information boards explain the geology, flora and fauna, as well as the land and its people. The shore also offers opportunities to spot great crested grebes, grey herons and Eurasian coots. Sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed.

To travel to the start or end points of the circular trail, bus route 433 from Hachenburg serves Seeburg, Steinebach an der Wied and Dreifelden. Check the current timetable if you plan to use this connection. Another hiking option is the northern loop of the Seven Ponds Trail: it is a shorter alternative to the full route of more than 30 kilometres, passes through a wetland and reaches the shore of Dreifelder Weiher. Check trail markers and conditions before setting out. The Romantic Lake District Loop offers a different focus: it passes the oldest stone church in the Westerwald and reaches the Wölferlinger Weiher nature reserve.

Longer-distance trails also offer different scales for planning. The WesterwaldSteig runs for 235 kilometres through the Westerwald and is divided into 16 stages; the route planner is the best place to check the current route. The Druidensteig covers 94 kilometres in seven day stages, passes through seven river valleys and features more than 30 geo-information points.

Culture and discoveries in the Westerwald

In the wider Westerwald destination, cultural themes range from village landscapes to geology and crafts. In Hachenburg, restored half-timbered houses around the Alter Markt define the historic town centre; the Löwenbrunnen fountain is also part of its historic character. The Hachenburger Erlebnis-Brauerei offers beer experience tours and brewing courses. Individual appointments can be arranged by phone; check current booking arrangements directly with the brewery.

The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel-Park displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse”, and illustrates around 25 million years of Earth’s history. Stöffel-Park itself is a former basalt quarry site covering around 140 hectares, where industrial heritage, geology and nature come together. The Westerwald Ceramics Museum explores the history of working with clay; most of the objects on display originated in a Westerwald clay pit. In the museum workshop, visitors can get creative themselves under expert guidance. Check the current workshop programme and booking conditions before your trip. The sculpture park in Steinebach displays five sculptures by local artists.

This makes it possible to distinguish Kuhnhöfen’s local landscape and religious history from the separate hiking and cultural themes of the wider Westerwald destination.
