In Wittgert, historic details meet opportunities for hiking. The cast-iron running fountain on Brunnenstraße and a half-timbered house bearing two different dates tell stories of different eras. RB5 and RB6 each offer a circular route, but with different points of focus.

Wittgert on the Saynbach

Wittgert lies at the foot of the Westerwald, on a gentle slope by the Saynbach. Ransbach-Baumbach, the pottery town, is about 4 kilometres away. These details provide a brief geographical overview for your stay: Wittgert is a hillside village, while nearby Ransbach-Baumbach has its own regional connection to ceramics as a pottery town.

Brunnenstraße and historic landmarks

The cast-iron running fountain on Brunnenstraße dates from the second half of the 19th century. At Brunnenstraße 8 stands a half-timbered house with some solid masonry sections, dated 1813. Its infill panels and masonry feature sgraffito dating from 1921. The two dates point to different historical details of the same house, rather than reducing it to a single date.

Another historic feature stands northeast of Wittgert on the road to Oberhaid: the wayside cross there probably dates from the second half of the 19th century. Those interested in local history will find, alongside the fountain and the house on Brunnenstraße, a historic landmark outside the village centre.

RB5 and RB6: two circular routes with different profiles

The RB5 – Wirscheid-Rembser Hof is an 8.3-kilometre circular hike rated easy. The route passes through tall woodland via Rembser Hof to Wirscheid. From the high ground near Wirscheid, there are far-reaching views across the Westerwald. You can access the RB5 from the Sieben Wege car park on the K127 between Wittgert and Ransbach-Baumbach.

The RB6 forms a circular route around Wittgert, climbing uphill to the Breitenau barbecue hut. Its official starting point is the Haiderbach school centre in Wittgert, where there are several car parks. The details offer different points of reference when choosing between the two routes: the RB5 is described by its length and difficulty rating, while the RB6 circles Wittgert and climbs to the barbecue hut.

Facilities in the village

Wittgert has the public Schinderhanneshütte barbecue area, a basketball court, a football pitch and a multi-purpose hall. These facilities complement the historic sights and hiking trails with other options in the village.

More cultural and natural attractions in the Westerwald

The Westerwald also has destinations with their own distinctive themes. Stöffel Park is a former basalt quarry site covering around 140 hectares, combining industrial heritage, geological history and nature. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel Park displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel mouse”; they document around 25 million years of geological history.

The Westerwald Ceramics Museum presents the history of working with clay. Most of the objects on display originated in a Westerwald clay pit. In the well-equipped museum workshop, you can get creative yourself under expert guidance; check the workshop programme and booking conditions before your trip. For longer hiking plans, the WesterwaldSteig runs for 235 kilometres through the Westerwald and is divided into 16 stages. Check the current route planner before setting off.
